When it comes to Marvel Comics, seeing fan-favorite heroes combine powers is always exciting, such as Thor slamming Captain America’s shield with Mjolnir to generate a shock wave. However, two fan favorites, Thor and Iron Man, did much more than simply just combine powers; they combined into one being known as Iron Hammer.

The tale of the combined heroes takes place in Infinity Warps: Iron Hammer by Al Ewing and Ramon Rosanas. Published in 2018, the story takes place in an alternate reality from the Marvel Universe everyone is familiar with, allowing wiggle room for unique twists and interpretations on classic heroes and their stories.

The comic opens on a man named Sigurd Stark reflecting on his past, well at least what he can remember. Five years earlier he had awoken in a storm with zero memory of who he was, yet a brain full of information about incredibly advanced technology. He used this vast knowledge to start his own tech company and quickly rise to wealth, however his inability to remember anything prior to these five years haunted him. After wandering into a mysterious forest, he is ambushed by Dark Elves that shoot him with poison arrows, but before a final headshot to the skull, he is recognized by the Krimson Kurse, who sees his benefit and orders the elves to take Stark to Eitri the Weapon-Smith for healing. Similar to the way a more traditional Tony Stark was imprisoned and forced to make weapons for terrorists, here Stark is imprisoned with a Dwarf who is ordered to create weapons for the Dark Elves. Just like the traditional Tony, this Stark teams up with his cellmate to take down those that they are forced to work for, and come together to build an incredible suit of armor. This time, rather than the suit keeping shrapnel from reaching Stark’s heart, the suit prevents the poison from doing so. It is here that he also receives his hammer, and, when combined with the armor, provides the suit with power to operate and function. After a series of battles flexing his new armor, Iron Hammer uses his newfound powers to head to Asgard, where it is eventually revealed that he is actually Stark Odinson, the son of its king, Howard Odin, a combination of Tony and Thor’s fathers.

So how exactly does this combination Thor/Iron Man come to fit into the Marvel Universe as a whole? Well, he is actually only one of many combined heroes that came to exist as a result of the Infinity Stones. When Gamora gained the powers of the Infinity Stone, she attempts to combine the souls of the universe into the Soul Stone, but unintentionally folds the entire universe in half, merging all of the souls together with another and creating the Warp World. It is the creation of this Warp World that ultimately leads to the combination of Tony Stark and Thor’s souls, thus producing Stark Odinson.

Eventually, the mysteries of the Warp World are uncovered, and a new super-team of combined heroes is formed deeming the name the Defenders (same name as a traditional earth team but a different group). The team consists of combinations of some of Marvel’s most impressive heroes, including Soldier Supreme (a combination of Captain America and Doctor Strange), Arachknight (a combination of Spider-Man and Moon Knight), and Weapon Hex (a combination of X-23 and Scarlet Witch). In an effort to restore the universe to normal without completely destroying the lives of those the event created, the Warp World is left to carry on its existence within the Soul Stone. We’re happy the Soul Stone led to the creation of Iron Hammer – because he is a badass combination of two heroes. Whether he appears in future storylines remains to be seen, however.
