Marvel Comics once asked the question, ‘what if Tony Stark became Sorcerer Supreme instead of Stephen Strange?” The answer was a new version of Iron Man who’s magical and technical prowess turned him into one the coolest heroes in the Marvel Universe. As for the original Doctor Strange? He never recovered from his injuries and became Tony Stark’s assistant with a bone to pick against the magical hero.

Marvel’s What If…? comics told the stories of the Marvel Universe reimagined in new storylines that offered alternate takes on some of Marvel’s most popular heroes and villains. Some of the most beloved What If…? storylines include Jane Foster becoming the new Thor (which was later made canon), Captain America never being frozen in ice, and what happened if Gwen Stacy hadn’t died at the hands of the Green Goblin. Hundreds of What if…? issues were published, and this year, an animated series of the same name debuted on Disney+, imagining new scenarios for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most memorable characters.

In What If…? #113 by Chris Duffy, Greg Schigiel, Ron Boyd, Chris Eliopoulos, and Nick Musolino, Marvel revealed what happened if Tony Stark and not Stephen Strange trained under the Ancient One. In the story, Stephen resents Tony for promising to help him fix his damaged hands, but the Sorcerer Supreme is constantly preoccupied with magical threats from different dimensions. Strange effectively is Tony’s butler and he’s not happy with how his life turned out. Tony builds a new Iron Man-esque armor to combine his mystical powers and advanced tech – it allows him to cast spells and use the armor as an additional power source. Using the armor, he takes on Dormammu.

Tony Stark’s Sorcerer Supreme can scan his enemies with his tech to gain an advantage against them. For example, when Dormammu sends parasites after them, his armor gives him a full body scan while showing him potential weaknesses and disadvantages. Then, he uses the information with his magic to take on some of the darkest threats that come his way. While Stephen Strange betrays Tony in order for Dormammu to get the use of his hands back, he eventually saves his friend from the villain’s grasp by getting in the suit himself. Stark and Dormammu leave their physical form to fight, and while they battle, his armor takes out the evil magic user’s real body. Even when not inside the armor, Tony found a way to use it effectively. In the end, Stephen Strange and Tony Stark end their friendship and head their separate ways.

In the one-shot, Iron Man proves just how dangerous a Sorcerer Supreme could be by masterfully combining his magical abilities with his technological advancements. It would be a lot of fun to see the alt-universe character return to show off his true power. The Doctor Strange/Iron Man hybrid remains one of the coolest What if…? creations ever made.
