Iron Man’s armor is about to become a terrifying prison for the iconic hero. This week, Marvel Comics announced a new tie-in for the upcoming Darkhold event. The first of five one-shots focuses on Tony Stark reading the magical Darkhold and getting stuck in his armor. Previews for the issue suggest he will suffer a fate worse than death.
Marvel’s Darkhold event is a long-time coming. The comic was initially scheduled to be released in 2020, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it was ultimately delayed to later this year. Darkhold: Alpha #1 by Steve Orlando and Cian Tormey will feature Doctor Doom coming across the powerful Darkhold book, which features some of the most magical spells in the Marvel Universe. Scarlet Witch will team up with Wasp, Iron Man, Blade, Black Bolt, and Spider-Man to stop the villain. Each hero will have to read the book to stop Doom and the sorcerer Chthon. The Darkhold most recently appeared in the Disney+ series, WandaVision.
Darkhold: Iron Man #1 by Ryan North and Guillermo Sanna will follow Stark’s interaction with the Darkhold. After reading the ancient text, Tony Stark’s armor will become a body horror-filled prison. Solicits reveal his life will be forever changed after reading the book. The one-shot’s cover by Valerio Giangiordano hows Iron Man’s body will react to the Darkhold, as it’s filled with tumors and repulsive sores, as his armor and physical body blend together in horrifying fashion.
It’s going to be a lot of fun to see North tackling a much more serious genre than he’s usually known for. The Canadian writer most famously penned the excellent Squirrel Girl series for Marvel Comics and most recently wrote the middle-school adaptation of The Mystery of the Meanest Teacher: A Johnny Constantine Graphic Novel for DC Comics. That’s not to say he hasn’t tackled more mature comics, as his adaptation of Slaughterhouse 5 was brilliant, but to see North write a horror-based one-shot should be a fun departure. North told Newsarama he’s excited to get inside Tony Stark’s mind.
Tony Stark is one of my all-time favorite Marvel characters: brilliant, charismatic, and a total jerk sometimes,” North says. “It’s a hard mix to pull off but Tony does it really well. What got me so excited about Darkhold was the chance it offered to really spend time with Tony, and then see what might happen to him if he took a small step sideways into a slightly different genre. I’m sorry, Tony. I love you, Tony.
Can Iron Man escape his body horror prison, or will he succumb to the Darkhold and be trapped living as a monster? No matter the answer, Tony Stark is in for a disgusting ride as he teams up with Scarlet Witch and his fellow heroes to stop the Darkhold from falling into the wrong hands permanently. Darkhold: Iron Man #1 by Marvel Comics is in comic book stores in October.
