The story of Final Fantasy 7 Remake differs from that of Final Fantasy 7, which raises the question of how close the upcoming FF7 INTERmission DLC will be to Yuffie’s story in the original game. Yuffie was an optional party member in FF7, but she was given a role in almost every other piece of related media.
Yuffie was encountered as a child by Zack Fair during the events of Final Fantasy 7: Crisis Core, as he meets her during the final days of the war with Wutai. She later meets Final Fantasy 7’s Turks during the events of Before Crisis, and inadvertently helps them in their struggle against the original incarnation of Avalanche. The fact that Yuffie and Vincent were optional party members in FF7 meant that they weren’t included in any cutscenes, including the ending. Dirge of Cerberus confirmed that the two of them were helping to evacuate Midgar before it was hit by Meteor. In On the Way to a Smile, Yuffie’s story involves her searching the planet for the cure for the Geostigma disease. She later aids Cloud during the events of Advent Children before taking on a major role in Dirge of Cerberus.
Those were Yuffie’s canonical story moments, but what about FF7 itself? Yuffie can be encountered as early as the Mythril Mine in Final Fantasy 7, but she only has a role in the Wutai side quest, which is optional. Yuffie and Vincent both only have incidental moments of dialogue in FF7 to link them to the story, outside of their unique side quests. This means that the developers of FF7 Remake have a lot of wiggle room with the INTERmission DLC for FF7 Remake.
Final Fantasy 7: Yuffie’s Untold Story
The INTERmission DLC adds two extra chapters to FF7 Remake, both of which run alongside the main story. The two chapters star Yuffie as she undertakes a dangerous mission in the city of Midgar. All of the content in INTERmission is brand-new and doesn’t connect to anything in the original FF7 or any other piece of FF7-related media. The INTERmission story is all unique content, and the fact that FF7 Remake is going in a new direction means it has the potential to do some surprising things.
It has been confirmed that Yuffie will encounter Cloud in FF7 Remake: INTERmission, which is already a divergence from the original storyline. It’s possible that Yuffie meets Avalanche in a forest outside of Midgar in the sequel to FF7 Remake, which will mirror the events of FF7, but the context of the meeting will be very different. It’s unclear how Yuffie’s story will play out in the future, but it will be exciting to see her elevated to main character status and having a major role in the story.
