Mulan is now available to watch on Disney+ for $30, but whether or not it’s worth paying for is dependent on who’s watching. Easily the biggest on-demand or streaming release from a major studio in months, Niki Caro’s Mulan was originally supposed to release in March 2020, but the movie was among the first to be pushed back due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Unlike other studios, Disney opted to wait and see what would happen instead of writing off 2020 and rescheduling their biggest movies for 2021.

And in the interim, they began pushing recently-released movies to Disney+ in the hopes of attracting more subscribers. First it was animated movies like Onward and Frozen 2, and then came bigger films Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Artemis Fowl, and Hamilton – the latter two were originally scheduled to release in theaters but were offloaded to the streaming service. Artemis Fowl didn’t make a big splash, but Hamilton certainly caused quite an impact on pop culture. Now, they have yet another big release on their hands.

Disney’s Mulan movie, starring Liu Yifei as the eponymous character, was meant to be the studio’s big live-action remake of the year – and it still is, to some extent. The problem is that, instead of releasing Mulan to all Disney+ subscribers as they did with Hamilton, the streaming service is testing out a premium tier, charging people $30 to watch Mulan (for an unlimited number of times as long as they stay subscribed). That price is too high for individual viewers, especially since Mulan will be free to all Disney+ subscribers in December, but it is worth it for families who either can’t or don’t want to go to the theaters.

Quality content for families is tough to come by right now, so Mulan is the perfect movie for those with kids or significant others to spend $30 on (only if they can afford it, of course, seeing as it is a high price tag). But if anyone is on the fence about it and wasn’t particularly looking forward to Mulan, to begin with, then they should hold off until Mulan releases to everyone else in December; it’s only three months away, after all. Really, whether or not Mulan’s $30 price tag is worth it is up to each subscriber. It’s roughly the price of two normal movie tickets in the United States, so if there are at least two people watching it, then it makes sense cost-wise. But if not, then it can be considered expensive.

The point of Mulan’s high price tag is to see if Disney can get away with sending additional movies to Disney+. Making something like Hamilton available early and to all subscribers costs much less than releasing a big-budget blockbuster onto a streaming service. This way, they can make at least some money off the people who were waiting to see Mulan, while also experimenting with a premium tier price that would allow them to potentially release movies like Soul or Cruella on.
