Hazelight has partnered once again with EA Games to create It Takes Two, a new co-op centric adventure coming in March 2021. Founded by former film director Josef Fares, he has led production on two previous titles that have explored themes of cooperation in the world of gaming. His first, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, released to massive critical acclaim in 2013. His second, A Way Out, was a rare co-op only title that requires two players to get through and plays entirely in split-screen. This was his first partnership with EA under the company’s indie-focused ‘EA Originals’ label.

A Way Out supports both online multiplayer and couch co-op and facilitates its multiplayer requirement by including a Friend’s Pass. This included code lets the second player enjoy the third-person action-adventure for free, garnering the game some attention upon release. The game featured altering perspectives based on which character a player was controlling and dialogue sequences that could play out in several different ways. It was the third EA Originals game released, preceded by Unravel and Fe. After A Way Out, the team started in immediately on It Takes Two, which made its first debut during this year’s EA Play live stream.

Now, during The Game Awards 2020 broadcast, a reveal trailer has shown off exactly what gamers can expect from It Takes Two. Josef and the team at Hazelight have reteamed with EA for a second production, which depicts a couple who have been transformed into dolls and forced through a series of extraordinary trials. The duo is seemingly antagonized by a sentient book that throws them into these quests that range from the ordinary to the extraordinary. The game is a co-op platformer and features many of the same requirements as A Way Out, although there is no forced split screen this time around.

The game shares some stylistic choices with games like LittleBigPlanet and fellow EA Original Unravel, but its tone couldn’t be more different from the latter. Unlike both of Josef’s previous projects, It Takes Two seems to be a more lighthearted affair that could appeal to families as well as friends and couples. Of course, the story of mending a broken relationship might fly over the heads of younger players, but the varied colorful locales will likely do more than enough to fill the void. The trailer ends by revealing a release date of March 26, 2021, and players can try out the game on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. The game is also confirmed to have Xbox Series X optimization via a released box art.

In a sea of trailers that seemingly blended together, only a few really stood out, and It Takes Two stood on top of that pile. Utilizing an instantly charming art style, inventive enemy design, and a tried and true idea for a co-op experience makes it seem like It Takes Two will appeal to a lot of folks. The interesting thing will be to see how Hazelight innovates that standard platformer formula into something interesting. Nothing about their previous work has ever seemed run of the mill, so it will be intriguing to see how this new work stands out from the crowd this March.
