IT Theory Ben Hanscom’s Relative Went To School With Carrie White

Stephen King’s 1974 novel Carrie shares a bizarre connection with Ben Hanscom of the 1986 novel IT. In fact, fans of his works have recently begun to theorize that the Vicky Hanscom mentioned in his first novel is a relative of this specific member of the Loser’s Club. Which means, Carrie White went to high school with Ben Hanscom’s relative. Due to the fact that there is little to no information given on Vicky throughout the King multiverse, it is difficult to determine how they are related or if they are but the novels may offer an answer.

In 1976, Brian De Palma adapted Carrie, starring Sissy Spacek as the titular character. IT has undergone two notable adaptations. It was first adapted in 1990 as a mini-series and again in Andy Muschietti’s feature-length films that premiered as two separate installments in 2017 and 2019. Neither of these adaptations outright mention the existence of a Vicky Hanscom, she exists almost solely in the 1974 novel. Due to Stephen King’s expansive multiverse that connects almost every story in his impressive bibliography to IT and even The Shining (1980), the theory that Vicky is related to Ben is not improbable though it is highly unlikely.

The primary issue with this theory in particular is the lack of overt information that could substantiate it enough to be regarded as fact. None of King’s novels have mentioned Vicky since 1974, but her shared last name could lend to a new expansion to the multiverse.

Why Vicky Hanscom Can’t Be Related To Ben

According to the novel, Ben Hanscom is 11 years old in 1958, and lives in Derry, Maine. The events in Carrie take place during 1979 in Chamberlain, Maine while the “White Committee” reports on the story of Carrie White and the disastrous effects of her telekinetic powers. At the time Carrie set fire to the school, she was 16 years old. While the novel takes place in 1979, it is entirely made up of flashbacks through documentation, meaning that the fire she started took place closer to 1974, when King published it. This would make Carrie’s birth year 1958 and, presumably, Vicky Hanscom’s as well. Therefore, in 1974, Vicky is 16 and Ben is 32.

King’s 1986 novel only features three of Ben’s relatives: his mother Arlene, his father, and his aunt. Despite the fact that he moves in with his aunt in Nebraska during high school, it is likely that he had remaining family members in the state of Maine where IT and Carrie take place. Regardless, there is no mention of the telekinetic powers Carrie has, nor does he mention any deceased family members that may cause him to stay away from Maine. Therefore, it is likely that these two don’t know one another or even share a universe. While Carrie connects to other King novels, the only connection it shares with IT is the Hanscom name, which seems to lead to a dead end.

No matter how much the book is unpacked in hopes of finding a connection, there is no relation between Ben and Vicky Hanscom. Ultimately, this theory is not feasible with the current multiverse. Unless Stephen King chooses to revisit the minor character mentioned in Carrie and explore the possibility of her connection to the story of IT, there is no proof they are related whatsoever.
