It: Why Bill Is The Most Important Member Of The Loser’s Club

All seven members of The Losers’ Club in Stephen King’s IT are important, but without Bill Denborough’s leadership, the group would’ve fallen apart.

It Why Bill Is The Most Important Member Of The Losers Club

Bill Denborough is the unofficial leader of IT’s Losers’ Club, and here’s why he’s the most important member. While Bill is the Losers’ Club leader, every member of the group matters. While this aspect is downplayed in the movie adaptations of IT, Stephen King’s book makes it clear that it was more than mere proximity and coincidence that brought these particular people together as children. No less than cosmic forces were at work, most notably a giant turtle that, essentially, vomited up the universe.

It makes sense that otherworldly forces would see fit to intervene, since IT is also not of the normal world, and is instead an alien creature hailing from a different, much more horrifying dimension. No human being could hope to face down such a monster without some kind of guiding light from above, serving to counteract the decidedly sinister and foreboding Deadlights that IT wants to introduce the Losers to. It just wouldn’t be a fair fight.

As much as each member of IT’s Losers’ Club was seemingly destined to band together against Pennywise, there’s no doubt that Bill is the foundation of the group. He’s brave, he’s thoughtful, he’s caring and he’s capable of delivering the kind of speech needed to rally his friends against what could be an unbeatable enemy. At the same time, The Turtle isn’t all-powerful, and can’t control everything or everyone. If Bill had chosen to make a particular decision outlined as a possibility in IT Chapter Two, he might never have survived to lead the Losers’ Club.

Bill Could Have Been Killed Instead Of Georgie

It Why Bill Is The Most Important Member Of The Losers Club

In 2017’s IT movie, it appears that Bill is too sick to play outside with his brother Georgie, but does something nice for him by fashioning a paper boat he can play with. It’s while sailing said boat that Georgie encounters and is ultimately killed by Pennywise in IT’s most infamous scene. However, IT Chapter Two reveals that part of Bill’s guilt surrounding Georgie’s death is he wasn’t sick that day and was faking it so that he didn’t have to go out and play.

Pennywise – while in Georgie’s form – twists the knife further and lays out the reason Georgie died is that Bill wasn’t there to protect him, hence the repeated phrase “you lied and I died”. There’s certainly a question as to whether that’s true or not, as IT isn’t exactly trustworthy and may well have ended up killing Georgie even with Bill there. Yet, there’s another possibility to consider. If Pennywise had targeted Georgie with his brother Bill around, the elder Denborough may well have stepped in between his brother and the monster to protect him. If he’d done that, then Pennywise could have killed Bill instead of Georgie, and in doing so, perhaps without even realizing it at that point, completely changed the future. Pennywise might well be an immensely powerful being, but like The Turtle it’s afraid of, isn’t all-powerful. It may not have been aware that killing Georgie would lead to Bill leading the Losers’ Club, or that killing Bill might’ve saved Pennywise’s own life later on.

How Bill’s Death Would’ve Changed IT’s Story

It Why Bill Is The Most Important Member Of The Losers Club

It can’t be overestimated how integral Bill was to the Losers’ Club forming in the first place. While some members were already friends with Bill before that summer and could’ve theoretically rallied around Georgie after Bill’s death, without Bill to lead the Losers’ Club, it wouldn’t be the same. Later additions like Ben, Beverly and Mike may have eventually joined out of self-preservation, but even then, there’s a question of whether the Losers could properly mesh without their destined leader guiding them. Bill’s grief and anger over Georgie’s death at that storm drain propelled so much of the Losers’ Club victories that it’s very hard to imagine them even having the courage to face down Pennywise without him.

Even if this ramshackle version of the Losers’ Club somehow did win their childhood battle against Pennywise, there would likely’ve been at least one casualty in the process. That would leave them at a disadvantage for the adult battle years later. Add to that the fact that Georgie is so young, and may never have felt like a full “Loser” due to the age gap, which would have led to a fractured connection among the group. There are so many factors working against this Losers’ Club without Bill leading them that their chances of defeating IT seem even bleaker. After all, the Turtle-guided Losers’ Club still gruesomely lost Stan and Eddie in the finale of the IT saga, meaning a Bill-free Losers’ Club may not have actually defeated Pennywise.

Why Bill Is The Most Important Member Of The Loser’s Club

In so many ways, Bill Denborough is the glue that held IT’s Losers’ Club together. While he needed every other member in place to grow strong enough to mount an offensive against Pennywise, it was Bill leading the Losers’ Club that spurred on the fight. It’s telling that when Pennywise saw the chance in the first IT movie, he grabbed ahold of Bill and made the rest of the Losers’ Club an offer: let IT have Bill and they could go live the rest of their lives. Pennywise (played by Bill Skarsgard) made this offer out of desperation, as he could see the Losers were on a path to victory, and realized that without Bill, they would likely fall apart and pose less of a threat.

Thankfully, the Losers’ Club didn’t accept those terms as even at their young ages, they had to know Pennywise couldn’t be trusted to uphold its end of the bargain. That’s in addition to them genuinely caring about their friend, and not wanting to leave him to die. Pennywise would’ve removed Bill from the equation, then likely taken the rest out one by one when they least expected it. That’s the easiest proof that Bill is truly the most important member of the Losers’ Club, the fact that IT recognizes how dangerous Bill is to the creature’s continued dominance over Derry, Maine. Thankfully for everyone involved that’s not an inter-dimensional monster, Bill made the right decision that day – as sad as it turned out for poor Georgie.
