It’s Good Chris Evans Isn’t Returning For Captain America 4

Chris Evans won’t appear in Captain America 4 as Steve Rogers, and that’s better for both Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson and the MCU as a whole.

Its Good Chris Evans Isnt Returning For Captain America 4

Chris Evans’ return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe will reportedly not take place in Captain America 4, and that’s a good thing. January 2021 brought rumors that Chris Evans was in talks to reprise his role as Steve Rogers in the MCU. Since then, both Evans and Kevin Feige (president of Marvel Studios) have denied the rumors. Evans didn’t reprise Steve Rogers for What If…?, (although he’s not alone in that) and Marvel is famously secretive about casting — therefore, there’s still evidence that the character may still reappear further down the line. Thankfully, however, it won’t be in Captain America 4.

Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers was one of the first heroes introduced to the MCU in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger. Evans has now portrayed Captain America in three standalone movies and all four Avengers films, as well as making cameo appearances in several other MCU movies. The end of Avengers: Endgame saw Steve officially retire from the role of Captain America, passing the mantle to Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson (Falcon) and Chris Evans publicly stated that he would not play Captain America again. The Disney+ TV show The Falcon and the Winter Soldier doubled down on the end of Steve’s tenure as the hero as it saw Sam Wilson pick up the shield.

While audiences might be eager for a cameo or larger reprisal of Chris Evans’ classic role, it is good that he won’t be appearing in Captain America 4. A major part of Sam Wilson’s plotline in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was based around his battle with the idea of becoming Captain America. This dealt with larger issues of racial disparity and injustice in the United States, as well as what it meant for Sam to carry a title rooted in both patriotism and (sometimes problematic) propaganda. However, it was also about Sam grieving Steve’s absence while fearing that abandoning the Falcon title to become Captain America would leave him living in Rogers’ shadow. After The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Captain America 4 is Sam Wilson and Anthony Mackie’s time to shine in a standalone film — and including a shocking Chris Evans return in the movie would risk overshadowing Sam Wilson and cheapening the narrative told in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

While The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s narrative was important for Sam Wilson, it was also crucial for allowing Marvel to send a message to audiences. Everyone in the series from background characters to Sam Wilson himself questioned Wilson’s identity and what had happened to Steve Rogers (going as far as to ask if Captain America might be on the moon). Through the conclusion of the series, Marvel was able to clearly say that Steve was really gone and that Sam was fully embracing the role of Captain America. As the first mantle to be passed within the MCU, Sam taking the shield in Falcon and Winter Soldier acknowledged that the character would be different from his predecessor, but the message was delivered in a positive manner. The character needs time to breathe on his own in Captain America 4 before he is forced to face that aspect of his identity again by coming face-to-face with Steve.

While introducing Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers to Captain America 4 would be unfair to Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson, it would also be unjust to Rogers himself. Avengers: Endgame already gave him a complete send-off by closing his loop and allowing him to go back in time and live the life Steve Rogers had dreamed of alongside Peggy Carter. If Marvel does eventually bring Evans and Rogers back to the MCU it will need to be in a way that does not overshadow Wilson, but also avoids cheapening Rogers’ Endgame ending.
