Star of the upcoming film Jackass Forever, Sean ‘Poopies’ McInerney, was bitten by a shark while filming a stunt for Discovery Channel’s Shark Week. McInerney is a professional surfer, performer and YouTuber who is also one of the newest members of the Jackass crew. In Jackass Forever, McInerney can be seen performing stunts alongside the likes of Johnny Knoxville and Steve-O.

The Jackass franchise has been a mainstay in media for over two decades now. It began with three controversial seasons running on MTV between 2000 and 2002 and has since spun off into an entire franchise with spin-offs, behind the scenes features, and three movies with a fourth on the way. Ahead of the release of their next film, some members of the Jackass crew including McInerney made their way over to the Discovery Channel to make some content for Shark Week.

While filming, the surfer-turned-daredevil got bitten by a shark while attempting a stunt in which he would “jump the shark,” a reference to a scene in Happy Days where a character literally jumps over a shark. McInerney launched off the ramp, but hadn’t gotten enough speed and didn’t make it very far. He ended up landing directly on top of where all the sharks had gathered. In a video recapping the stunt McInerney posted to his YouTube page, graphic video footage can be seen of his hand going limp and blood pouring out into the water around him as medics race to pull him out of the water. When describing the incident, McInerney began to get choked up, describing how he believed that he was going to die:

“I thought I was going to die … there were like 10 sharks around me and I was trying to swim out. And I couldn’t. I couldn’t swim out dude. I knew I got bit and when I got bit I thought I was going to get attacked by like 6 more sharks and luckily I didn’t. I just got my hand bit. Scariest thing in my life. I couldn’t really see much and I was in shock.

Thankfully, he was able to receive first aid immediately and get to a hospital soon after, meaning that he is now expected to make a full recovery. McInerney went on to make an Instagram post for his fans, showing that he is regaining his range of motion in his hand and wrist and doing alright.

Jackass became known for its death defying stunts and serious injuries, including a broken back and a brain bleed, but this stunt took things to new heights, showcasing just how dangerous these stunts are. The accident is already being dubbed “the gnarliest incident in Jackass history” and many members of the team are pointing to how much attention McInerney is going to get from this, sparing no opportunity to plug their new movie. Steve-O even called the accident a “real smash hit” citing the fans that McInerney will supposedly get for putting his life on the line.

Whether or not audiences agree with the actions of the Jackass crew, it seems not even a shark bite can slow them down. Their newest movie, Jackass Forever is scheduled for theatrical release on October 22, 2021. It will include McInerney as a new cast member and no doubt touch on the shark bite.
