Director James Gunn has rekindled discussions regarding the potential for R-rated films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, saying that he believes such a project is inevitable. Gunn first burst onto the superhero blockbuster scene with his breakout 2014 film, Guardians of the Galaxy. His success with the Guardians paved the way for the writer/director’s central role in subsequent MCU installments, as well as his current partnership with DC for their upcoming R-rated film The Suicide Squad. Although Gunn has recently expressed fatigue with superhero films, his insight into the industry has cemented him as a prominent voice in the superhero film discourse.

At first glance, Gunn’s irreverent sense of humor seems at odds with the family-friendly image that Disney notoriously upholds. Indeed, that same sense of humor landed Gunn in hot water with Disney, which eventually resulted in the director’s sudden (but ultimately brief) firing in 2018. However, over the years, it seems as though the studio has progressively softened its stance on future films potentially venturing into R-rated territory.

In a recent interview with IndieWire, Gunn claimed that he is “almost sure that [Marvel Studios] will” release an R-rated MCU film. While he still thinks some properties (like his own Guardians of the Galaxy series) should retain a PG-13 rating, Gunn certainly believes that there is room for grittier storytelling with certain characters. I think they will, I think they will, I’m almost sure they will [make an R-rated MCU film].

Not “Guardians” though, because “Guardians” are family movies, so it’s different. People are like, “Finally, they let you do R rating. What would ‘Guardians’ be like if that was R rated?” I’m like, “But it’s not.”

I could go off and make a Drax movie that’s R-rated, that I would love to do, like barbarian Drax. But the “Guardians” movies are fables, and I don’t think of them like that. I don’t write them like that. It’s a different type of movie, and you can have some gore and some scary darkness in there and things like that, which is good, but it’s not the rock and roll of “Suicide Squad.”

Gunn’s statements shouldn’t come as a huge surprise, especially because Marvel head Kevin Feige already confirmed a while back that the MCU’s continuation of the Deadpool films would remain R-rated. Still, it’s reassuring to know that more adult-oriented films are still on the studio’s radar. While an R-rating is not at all indicative of a given film’s quality, the fact that the studio is contemplating them shows that they are not overly hesitant to deviate from the standard formula.

R-rated blockbusters have historically been a gamble for movie studios. By gearing a film toward adults, studios lose a significant percentage of their potential income from children and young teens who aren’t allowed to attend. However, R-rated films have become much more lucrative in the past decade with films like Fifty Shades of Grey, Logan, and It becoming worldwide commercial successes. DC already beat Marvel to the punch with R-rated interpretations of their properties, with 2019’s Joker as well as Gunn’s upcoming The Suicide Squad. If the MCU follows suit – which Gunn is adamant will happen – fans will have a lot of new stories to look forward to.
