Japan Pokémon Fans Rank Red & Green As The Most Popular Pokémon Game

The first generation of Pokémon games has come out on top again, as a recent poll among Japanese gamers has listed Pokémon Red & Green as the most popular entries in the series.

Pokémon Red & Green were the first entries in the series released in Japan, but they would go on to receive updated versions in order to fix numerous bugs and improve the quality of the graphics. This led to the release of Pokémon Blue, followed by Pokémon Yellow, which more closely followed the story of the Pokémon anime. When the first generation of Pokémon games was brought overseas, they used the updated Pokémon Blue as a template, leading to the release of Pokémon Red & Blue. Pokémon Green never saw a release in the west, but its remake on the Game Boy Advance did, in the form of Pokémon LeafGreen.

The first generation of Pokémon games has always held a special place in the hearts of fans, especially those who remember the Pokémania boom of the ’90s. It seems that Japanese fans love these games as much as the international ones. According to NintendoSoup, a recent poll held by goo Ranking listed the most popular Pokémon games, as voted for by Japanese gamers. Pokémon Red & Green came out on top with 159 votes.

It’s surprising to see Pokémon X & Y placed so high on the list, as well as Pokémon HeartGold & SoulSilver placing so low. What isn’t surprising is seeing the Generation 1 games still being loved by fans after all of these years.
