Pokemon Legends: Arceus has dominated headlines since it launched last week, and rightly so. The game feels like more than just a spinoff, and due to how warmly it has been welcomed by Pokemon fans the world over, it could be the norm for mainline Pokemon games moving forward. Positive reviews have to be coupled with big sales numbers though, of course, and it seems Legends: Arceus has that covered too.

The game has had a monstrous launch in Japan, shifting 1.425 million copies in its first week. That makes it the second most successful launch in Nintendo Switch history in Japan with only Animal Crossing: New Horizons able to better it. The hit 2020 game sold 1.81 million copies in its launch week and has since gone on to become the second best-selling Switch game ever worldwide.

Legends: Arceus has even managed to better the launch week of the last Pokemon games to come before it, Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl. BDSP sold 1.396 million copies during its opening week. Although the games were technically remakes, Nintendo and Game Freak will be paying close attention to the fact Legends: Arceus performed slightly better than a Pokemon game that had a huge opening in Japan.

It should also be noted Legends: Arceus hasn’t been plagued with the same issues as BDSP were at launch. The remakes launched with a number of problems, including bugs and glitches. Other than some complaints about graphics, which really apply to Pokemon games in general, feedback surrounding Legends: Arceus has been overwhelmingly positive. That suggests its sales will remain strong and it could end up ranking as one of the most successful Switch games ever in the months to come.

These latest Legends: Arceus numbers come on the same day as Nintendo revealed its latest financial figures. As expected, the Switch has now surpassed the lifetime sales of the Wii, making it the most successful home console in Nintendo history. Those sales were greatly boosted by the arrival of the OLED model back in October. There are now more than 100 million Switch consoles out in the wild, and it seems a lot of those owners are loving Legends: Arceus.
