Sony Pictures has dropped a new Morbius vignette with Jared Leto talking about the conflicted Marvel character that has never before appeared in a live-action film.

Jared Leto, who plays the titular Dr. Michael Morbius, revealed how demanding the role was of him in a new featured video. According to the actor, he loved the opportunity to do something transformational and different from his previous works. Leto has to portray Morbius in his most frail, sick human shape — and a monstrous and powerful being later, so it was a very intense physical role for him.

As seen in the footage, Morbius has some unique vampire powers, however, they are beyond his control, making the character an unpredictable antihero. While Tom Hardy can negotiate with his symbiote in Venom, Morbius simply unleashes the darkness inside him without being able to control it. Jared Leto hinted it would be fun to see where the creators can go with that, adding “there’s a web of opportunity.” Considering the upcoming movie is a part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, fans are already eager to see Jared Leto and Tom Holland stand-off.

It is worth noting that Leto is no newcomer to the superhero movie genre. He previously played the Joker in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad and briefly repeated his role with a drastic redesign for Zack Snyder’s Justice League. It’s highly unlikely that we’ll see more of him as the terrifying clown, but Leto might return as Morbius if the first installment proves to be a success.

Morbius had a pretty complicated road to the big screen. Originally intended for a July 2020 release, the movie was postponed numerous times due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and is currently scheduled for 28 January 2022. With Venom: Let There Be Carnage box office already crossing the $400 million mark worldwide, Sony is building up the suspense for this upcoming offering in its own antihero cinematic universe. Hopefully, Morbius is as good as the symbiote films.
