Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday might feature Jason Voorhees’s only accidental kill. The director of the original Friday The 13th Sean S. Cunningham returned to the series after Paramount had burned it out with endless sequels during the 1980s, ending with Jason Takes Manhattan. This eighth installment was a critical and commercial disappointment, but Cunningham felt a crossover between Jason and Freddy Krueger would be the perfect way to refresh both franchises.

To this end, development began on what would become Freddy Vs Jason in the early 1990s, though it would be a decade before it finally reached screens. The crossover was also put on the backburner at New Line when Wes Craven returned to Freddy to make New Nightmare, so Cunningham decided to develop a solo movie with Jason instead. Jason Goes To Hell lived up to the title by actually sending the title slasher to Hell while introducing an incredibly convoluted mythology. The movie also borrowed a page from The Hidden and saw Jason become a body-hopping demon for most of the runtime.

Jason Goes To Hell has very divided reactions among the franchise’s fanbase, with some considering it a demented gem while others feel it’s just awful. Still, it’s certainly one of the most unique, and it also features what might just be Jason’s only accidental murder. The sequel reveals that Jason has a half-sister named Diana Kimble (Erin Gray) and a niece named Jessica. To be reborn after his body is destroyed by police, he needs to transfer to a blood relative, and he possesses a Deputy named Josh (Andrew Bloch) to attack Diana.

Jason – as Deputy Josh – attacks Diana in an effort to transfer himself into her body. Jason Goes To Hell’s hero Steven (John D. LeMay) shows up in the time to tackle Josh, and they briefly scuffle. Jason/Josh then searches for a weapon, while Diana helps an injured Steven stand up. Jason then tosses a knife at Steven but hits Diana instead, and she soon dies of her wound. While it’s possible Jason WAS aiming for Diana, this feels unlikely. He wanted Steven out of the way after he interrupted his plan, while Diana was just standing in the wrong place.

Of course, in previous Friday The 13th movies, Jason very much intended to kill each one of his victims. This makes Diana a special case, though the finale would reveal that Jason didn’t actually need a living body to be reborn, as he uses Diana’s corpse to return to life. Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday’s ending scene also features Jason roleplaying as a possessed cop, which proves he can be a good actor when required.
