Resort To Love brings music and love to the shores of Mauritius in Netflix’s new romantic comedy, arriving July 29. The story follows struggling musician Erica (Christina Milian, Soundtrack) whose engagement gets broken and big musical break postponed. In an effort to renew herself she takes a wedding singer job at a posh resort only to find even more chaos.

Jason (Jay Pharoah, Saturday Night Live), the ex she was trying to get over, winds up at the same resort ready to marry his fiancée Beverly (Christiani Pitts). Meanwhile, Erica starts falling for Jason’s brother Caleb (Sinqua Walls, 15: 17 to Paris) while still trying to get closure for her past romance. Will Beverly find out the truth after becoming fast friends with Erica?

Pharoah and Walls spoke to Screen Rant about tackling the complicated dynamics within the love square onscreen and finding camaraderie offscreen.

Screen Rant: I had so much fun watching Resort To Love, and I think what I love most about it was that nobody was villainized. Jay, can you talk about what Jason finds in Beverly that he couldn’t see with Erica?

Jay Pharoah: In Beverly, he sees his dream wife. He sees the woman that’s gonna raise his kids. He sees a small town, but a small town that’s still important. He basically sees himself in her, and that’s why he was able to make the decision so quickly.

And that’s why it took him so long to actually propose to [Erica]. With Beverly, it’s like when you know, you know. If it’s somebody that you just feel an inherent connection to, and everything just clicks, then it’s like, “Why not?” [sings] “We ain’t getting younger, so you might as well do it.”

I think he was immediately able to see that in Beverly’s character, and she completes him.

Speaking of inherent connections, Caleb feels that with Erica. Sinqua, what is it like building that dynamic with Christina, and having that relationship even though she’s your brother’s ex?

Sinqua Walls: She completes him. [laughs] Sometimes it’s like, “That was good. I’ll just take that.”

No, it’s really twofold. Shoutout to our sister, Christina, because she was such a consummate professional, and she made it easy to work with everyday. She’s always committed to wanting to give you the most she can in the scene, whether she was working with me, or she was working with Jay. Which is a crazy triangle of having to balance two different relationships as an actress, and she did so well. She showed up for us every day, so she made it easy because she’s so committed to just being the best for you. So, you want to give that back to her.

And then for Caleb, it’s a delicate balance because I think this is the first time he’s ever truly had feelings. Whereas he had all the answers as he was going through life, because everything was very definitive. When you find yourself in a situation where you love someone, that’s where the chaos goes in – because logic no longer matters. So, he couldn’t speak to logic.

I think it helped them understand his brother better, and I think it helped him grow. Then I think when he comes out on the other side, he learns that everything lives in a gray zone that he has to navigate with a little bit more sensitivity.

Also, the scenery was so gorgeous. You got to film in the loveliest place in Mauritius. What was your favorite part about filming there?

Sinqua Walls: Everything. We talked about it all the time, and I’m gonna let Jay answer as well. Because for both of us, and for all of us, every day on the island was magic. We are all so grateful and so blessed to be there, from the people to the culture to the beaches – to the people that were working at the hotel with us. It was a magical experience.

Jay Pharoah: Yes, we all experienced it simultaneously. And it was such a beautiful couple of months to be able to get away, to be able to bond with new people. But since you all are going through that situation, to just be even tighter. Check in on folks and just have that camaraderie. Meeting people and just seeing who people are behind the camera. Really getting that intimate view was beautiful.

Sinqua Walls: People don’t check on each other, and that’s something that we did. I remember a couple of times Jay during quarantine being like, “I’m just checking on you, bro.” And that’s sometimes will be the only thing that can lift you up, and you never know. So, just be mindful. “I’m just checking on you. I don’t want anything.” It’s such a gift.
