Jeremy Renner reveals he is open to play Old Man Hawkeye for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and his thoughts on changes to the character. Renner made his MCU debut as Clint Barton with a cameo appearance in Thor before becoming a primary character in The Avengers a few years later and carrying the role through Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Endgame and Marvel’s What If…?. The star is currently gearing up for the release of his solo miniseries Hawkeye on Disney+.

Inspired by Matt Fraction’s comic book run, Hawkeye will center on Clint after the events of Avengers: Endgame as he reluctantly takes Hailee Steinfeld’s Hawkeye super fan Kate Bishop under his wing to take down the enemies from his Ronin past and get home in time for Christmas. Alongside Renner and Steinfeld, the cast for the series includes Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez, aka Echo, Florence Pugh as Black Widow’s Yelena Belova, Vera Farmiga, Fra Fee, Tony Dalton, Zahn McClarnon, Linda Cardellini and Brian d’Arcy James. As the series is set to see Clint pass on the titular mantle to Kate, many are wondering what the next chapter in the former’s MCU life will be.

Ahead of Hawkeye’s premiere on Disney+, Renner spoke with Jake’s Takes to discuss the series and his thoughts on the future of the character in the MCU. When asked about possibly adapting Old Man Hawkeye for the MCU, the star expressed an openness to exploring this version of the archer and his thoughts on a different approach than taken in the comics. “Yeah, I love it. Old Man Hawkeye. [Laughs] Yeah, I hope I’m a super joyful Hawkeye. If I’m that old, I hope I just forget all the bad things that happen in life, and he’s just happy. He’s happy Hawkeye. He’s 80, he can’t move, he’s got a terrible limp, but he’s so happy!”

Old Man Hawkeye first found life in the Old Man Logan comics as an aging and blind version of his character hired by the similarly aging Wolverine to help deliver a secret package to New Babylon through a desolate future America. The Old Man Logan comic would serve as the main inspiration for James Mangold’s Logan, the final installment in Fox’s X-Men franchise to star Hugh Jackman in the titular role. Between the rights being held by the separate studios and Mangold taking a looser approach to adapting the comic, Renner’s Hawkeye was ultimately not included in the screen adaptation.

With Renner’s take on the character starting off as a more cynical and grounded portrayal audiences easily connected with, his thoughts on a change for an Old Man Hawkeye adaptation could be a welcome addition to the MCU later down the road. Additionally, as the spin-off comic series saw the titular character teaming up with Kate Bishop to hunt down Baron Zemo and the Thunderbolts before he completely loses his eyesight, the storyline could very well be explored in the future with Bishop alongside Zemo now in the MCU and a Thunderbolts movie reportedly in development. In the meantime, audiences can look forward to Renner’s former Avenger getting his time to shine in the lead when Hawkeye premieres on Disney+ on November 24.
