Here’s a quick guide to Joe Dempsie’s movie and TV career thus far. British actor Joe Dempsie is best known nowadays for his role on Game of Thrones as Gendry Baratheon, the bastard son of King Robert and friend – and one-time love interest – of Arya Stark. Despite a three-season long absence from the show Gendry emerged as a Game Of Thrones fan favorite and had quite the journey, rising from enslaved lowborn to wight-fighter to the legitimized Lord of Storm’s End.

Joe Dempsie had, however, been acting for a decade before he landed his Game Of Thrones role. His first TV jobs were a series of one-off roles in British TV shows including Peak Practice, Doctors and Born And Bred. He also had small roles in British movies Heartlands and One For The Road but his first big role of note came playing party animal Chris Miles in teen comedy-drama Skins. After Skins, Dempsie had a couple more one-off roles playing a soldier named Cline in a 2008 episode of Doctor Who titled “The Doctor’s Daughter” and William, a childhood friend of the titular warlock in BBC fantasy-drama Merlin.

In 2009, Dempsie played British footballer Duncan McKenzie in the semi-autobiographical Tom Hooper-directed sports movie The Damned United and later had a small role as a police officer in Jason Statham-fronted thriller Blitz. He took on a ton of TV jobs in the early 2010s, playing Higgy in the TV miniseries This Is England ’86, a TV spin-off of Shane Meadows’ 2006 film This Is England, and John – the primary antagonist in the BBC’s BAFTA-winning horror-drama The Fades. He also starred in the Channel 4 shows Southcliffe – a drama about a spree shooting – and New Worlds, a historical drama set in the late 17th century.

The British actor exercised his American accent playing a U.S. Army soldier in the 2014 sci-fi sequel Monsters: Dark Continent and reprised his role as Higgy the following year for sequel miniseries This Is England ’90. He also appeared in the BBC murder mystery Retribution – also known as One Of Us – and added a few more British movies to his résumé with Burn Burn Burn, Dark River and Been So Long.

Game Of Thrones may have come to an end but Joe Dempsie’s career hasn’t slowed down. He starred alongside Mark Strong in both seasons of British spy thriller Deep State as MI6 agent Harry Clarke and will next appear in the Channel 4 drama Adult Material with fellow British actors Hayley Squires and Rupert Everett.
