Nate Moore, one of the producers of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, says John Walker hasn’t been redeemed by the series’ end. Introduced at the end of the first episode, John Walker was immediately set up as being in opposition to Sam and Bucky. This is only exacerbated when he tried to recruit the pair as his wingmen in the second episode after a disastrous encounter with the Flag Smashers. Walker’s cockiness, though, isn’t what leads to his downfall.

As Walker crumbles under the pressure of being Captain America, he decides to take the Super Soldier serum after he is beaten in a fight with the Dora Milaje. Although the serum gives Walker super strength, it also amplifies his underlying personality traits, revealing a deep seated rage boiling under the surface. When his partner and longtime friend Lemar Hoskins (AKA Battlestar) is killed by Karli Morgenthau, Walker pursues another Flag Smasher and murders him in cold blood with Captain America’s shield.

In Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s final episode, Walker helps Sam and Bucky stop the Flag Smashers, but Moore tells EW that he doesn’t believe this means Walker gets a clean slate. Sam and John may acknowledge each other after the climactic battle, but Moore says that this is more of a nod to the conversations that need to be had between the two, rather than a moment of forgiveness.

It actually would have been selling the character short just to go full heel. Frankly, I don’t think that he’s fully redeemed by the end, by any stretch. I don’t even think he thinks he’s fully redeemed. There’s a moment after Sam’s speech where they see each other and it’s not like, ‘Hey, bro. We’re good.’ It’s, ‘We have more to talk about. This is not over. You are not completely on the side of the angels.’

After John Walker is recalled and stripped of his title of Captain America, it looks as if he may go rogue, recreating Steve Rogers’ iconic shield and heading to New York City. While Walker does end up on the side of the good guys during the finale, there’s still a sense of anger and unfinished business between him and Sam. It’s clear that Walker isn’t on a path to forgiveness either. He may have helped save the GRC members kidnapped by the Flag Smashers, but there is still a personal motivation in seeing the group get taken down.

At the conclusion of Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s finale, it’s clear that Walker will continue his work as a rogue hero, becoming US Agent ahead of what looks to be future appearances in the MCU. Whether or not he uses his new position for good remains to be seen, but if he’s working with Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, it might not be virtuous. Either way, John Walker is the perfect example of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s dissection of morality and the ways in which many operate within a gray area muddled by their own personal motivations. If that continues for Walker, things could get even uglier before they get better.
