JoyCon Drift What Is It Do You Have It And Will It Ever Get Fixed

Ever since the release of the Nintendo Switch console in 2017, gamers have complained about the “Joy-Con Drift” problem that has plagued every console user. But what exactly is this “drifting issue” that has so many gamers up in arms? And why hasn’t it gone away? Here’s a complete rundown on the Joy-Con Drift problem, how you can know if you have it, and updates from Nintendo regarding the issue.

What Is It?

The term “Joy-Con Drift” was coined by Nintendo Switch users to describe the phenomenon when the Switch’s removable controllers would detect movement, even if the player was not touching the Joy-Con’s sticks. It’s been reported that this “drifting” has even occurred when players weren’t even holding the Joy-Con controllers themselves.

Joy-Con Drifting has the potential to lead to a number of annoying and frustrating occurrences, such as avatars moving on the screen for no reason, or the camera shifting suddenly. Especially when it comes to games that require precise movements, such as when playing on smaller stages in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, traversing through the complex landscape of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, or making a sharp turn in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, drifting can be a huge hindrance and annoyance.

But the Joy-Con drift isn’t limited solely to the dockable Nintendo Switch console. Many gamers have also reported drifting issues with the handheld Nintendo Switch Lite console (whose controllers are not detachable), which was only released last year.

Do You Have It?

Joy-Con Drift isn’t something that’s visually apparent just by looking at your console. However, if you’ve ever played a game and suddenly saw your avatar move in a direction or speed you weren’t guiding it in, either while holding the Joy-Cons or not, then it’s pretty likely you have the drifting issue.

If you discover your joy-cons are unfortunately part of the unlucky drifting batch, there are a couple of solutions:

Firstly, you can buy new Joy-Cons (though that can be annoying and expensive, especially considering the issue doesn’t usually stem from long-term usage on the controllers). You can try re-calibrating your control sticks, which would be the easiest (and cheapest) solution. If that fails, you can always try taking apart your controller and replacing the dud thumbstick with a new one. Materials to replace the Switch controllers are easily searchable on Amazon and there are plenty of video tutorials online, so DIYing this project isn’t too daunting of a task. You could also use special cleaning solutions and try cleaning the underside of the thumbstick to get it to work properly again.

However, if all else fails, you could always just send your controllers back to Nintendo for an official repair session…and run the risk of paying shipping and handling and waiting for them to be returned, only to have the same problem come up again.

Ultimately though, these are all short-term fixes to a long term problem Nintendo has yet to offer an actual solution for.

Will It Ever Get Fixed?

At the time of writing, not much else has been revealed about the issue since Nintendo’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, apologized for the Joy-Con drift problem in a Q&A. Beyond the acknowledgment that Nintendo is aware of the issue, we also know that Nintendo is in the middle of a lawsuit regarding the issue that’s keeping the company from releasing any more information about the drifting problem. However, there’s been no official word regarding future plans about the Switch controllers, or if a solution to the Joy-Con drifting problem is in the works.

Beyond that, it’s difficult to say whether or not the problem will ever be completely fixed. Even if Nintendo does release a new Switch console and controllers that are completely drift-free, that doesn’t help the millions of people who already own Switch consoles and have put up with DIYing drifting solutions or spending their own money on replacements for the past three years.
