Warning: this article contains spoilers for Juggernaut #5!

With the launch of the Juggernaut series, writer Fabian Nicieza and artist Ron Garney have been giving Marvel Comics fans a radically new perspective on the longtime agent of destruction. Rarely are characters allowed to evolve and redefine themselves to this extent, and so far the turn has been quite successful at delivering top-notch storytelling. Civilians throughout Marvel’s Universe are breathing a sigh of relief now that Juggernaut’s violent rampages are targeted at evildoers. Unfortunately, not everyone is as quick to accept Juggernaut’s redemption. Cain Marko’s relationship with his step-brother Charles Xavier, leader and founder of the X-Men, has been tumultuous at best and dangerously antagonistic at its worst. Even now that Marko is making amends for his life of crime and forging a difficult new path for himself as a superhero, the two aren’t on the best of terms.

When the series began, Marko was struggling to find his way in a world that is hostile to the reformed, and doing so without the support of close relationships. Luckily for him, it didn’t take long before another wayward soul entered his orbit. Neither was there a great delay until Juggernaut and the teenage, self-hating mutant known as D-Cel formed a strong bond. Sadly, just as the young mutant feels comfortable finally revealing her human name, the two must go their separate ways, at least for now. But there’s still one last surprise left in store.

Though her name is Miranda Manuel, Juggernaut’s sidekick goes by D-Cel because of her uncanny ability to create deceleration fields. In previous issues, her mutant powers have proved strong enough to slow both the Hulk and Juggernaut. And that’s not all. Since her powers manifested, D-Cel has remained under the radar of the mutant nation of Krakoa. But how is that possible? How has a teenager still learning to use her powers managed to go unnoticed by the powerful mutants of Krakoa, who have been actively campaigning to relocate all mutants to their island paradise?

Turns out her deceleration field has a useful side-effect she wasn’t even aware of. Not only have her powers been shielding her from Krakoa’s telepaths – the most powerful in the world – but also blocking Cerebro’s sensors from scanning her. That’s right, Cerebro, aka the device designed to amplify Charles Xavier’s already unmatched telepathic abilities to encompass the entire planet, was beaten by D-Cel. What’s more remarkable is that she’s been doing this passively, without any effort or having to wear a special helmet day and night. Who knows what she’ll be capable of once she’s mastered her abilities?

It’s always fun to discover in a new series that it isn’t just the title character who’s full of surprises. It isn’t every day that a new mutant of such incredible power enters the Marvel Comics canon either. Whether or not D-Cel will now transition to the X-Men, who are currently putting their membership to a vote, or any other X-team, is still unknown, but the potential is there for this awesome new character. In any case, it’s safe to say that she will cross paths with Juggernaut again in the near future – one of few friends Cain still has, redemption or not.
