Netflix’s newest original series, Julie & The Phantoms, is full of awesome musical numbers – from rock songs to ballads and glamorous jazz numbers. Produced and partly directed by High School Musical director Kenny Ortega, it’s no surprise that the show is full of song and dance with a soundtrack that will instantly get stuck in fans’ heads.

The majority of the songs in the series are catchy hits that include some really fun interactions between characters whether it be dancings or sharing a mic. However, some songs miss the mark and end up being pretty cringeworthy and easy to laugh at.

10 Best: Unsaid Emily

‘Unsaid Emily’ is probably one of the most emotional songs of the entire show. It’s about Luke’s mother, with whom he had a difficult relationship with before he died. Julie gives the lyrics to his mother and it’s an extremely emotional episode and is probably the angstiest episode in the show. In a way, Luke gets closure now that his mother knows how much he loved her and his mother gets some closure about her son’s death.

9 Worst: The Other Side Of Hollywood

‘The Other Side Of Hollywood’ feels completely out of place from the rest of the show’s musical numbers. Of course, the point of Caleb’s parties is to show that he’s clearly been around for a very long time and that it’s meant to emulate a golden age of Hollywood kind of vibe. However, the song is a bit weird and it doesn’t really fit in.

8 Best: Now Or Never

‘Now Or Never’ is the perfect song to start off the series. It’s a song with a rock sound that pairs perfectly with the impression that Sunset Curve wants to leave. With most of the main vocals being sung by Luke, it’s a really fun song and gives the audience a great taste of what they can do, which is all the more tragic knowing that they don’t actually get to perform their set at the Orpheum on that night.

7 Worst: Wow

A lot the songs on the show are typically poppy, especially coming from Carrie’s girl group Dirty Candy. ‘Wow’ is one of those songs that show Dirty Candy is there for spectacle rather than the heart of the show.

It works as good competition for Julie and The Phantoms and it’s not a terrible song, but it’s not as musically endearing as some of the other songs on the show.

6 Best: Stand Tall

Stand Tall is a great addition to the series because it comes right at the end of the first season after things get pretty dramatic. Julie believes that she’ll have to perform by herself and without Luke, Alex, and Reggie, and she gets a sign from her mother which makes her think everything will be fine. It’s the first time she’s comfortable performing on her own and the song becomes even better once the boys join in. It’ll be fun to see how they progress as a band after their gig at the Orpheum if the show is picked up for a second season.

5 Worst: I Got The Music

The musical number for ‘I Got The Music’ is probably the closest in similarity to a musical number from High School Musical. It’s annoyingly catchy and it has a great beat, and even though the audiences know by now that Julie is just daydreaming, it’s a pretty lengthy song that feels quite generic. It also doesn’t do much to carry the story forward since the number is only a figment of her imagination.

4 Best: Flying Solo

Flying Solo is a really cool song, especially because it’s where Julie’s best friend Flynn finds out that Alex, Luke, and Reggie are actually ghosts. It’s a great reveal and it’s also a really catchy song with sweet lyrics about friendship. Flynn’s reaction is very funny and it also happens to be the moment where Julie decides she’s forming a band with them. It’s one of the more comedic moments of the show and the song works very well.

3 Worst: You Got Nothing To Lose

‘You Got Nothing To Lose’ is probably the most forgettable song in the entire series. It’s once again sung by Caleb at one of his parties and it sounds a lot like The Other Side Of Hollywood.

It’s a very repetitive song that lacks the fun feeling that the rest of the songs add to the series. It’s not as impressive as it should be considering how glamourous and extroverted Caleb is.

2 Best: Edge Of Great

‘The Edge Of Great’ is one of the best songs in the series, purely because Julie and the boys look truly in their element. It has a great start with just Julie opening the song as always, and the crowd’s reaction to Luke, Alex, and Reggie materializing out of nowhere and joining her onstage only adds to the energy of the number. It’s a great song that really captures the essence and the mood of Julie and The Phantoms.

1 Worst: Perfect Harmony

As one of the few slower-paced songs in Julie and The Phantoms, ‘Perfect Harmony’ is a lot to take in. It’s a romantic song where Luke and Julie dance together, and it’s very cringeworthy. Luke has a wild hairdo and the whole number could easily fit into a cheesy ’80s movie. The song itself isn’t very memorable as it doesn’t have much that makes it catchy, and it’s weird to think of Luke and Julie as a couple when Luke is a ghost.
