Horror master Junji Ito just made his return with the new manga Sensor. Filled with all the grotesque artwork and deep cosmic horror that fans have come to expect from Ito, this new tale outshines his masterpiece Uzumaki to become one of the most horrifying journeys ever committed to the pages of manga.

With disturbing tales such as Gyo and The Enigma of Amigara Fault, Junji Ito has established himself as one of the most internationally acclaimed horror creators, and his latest story Sensor will only add to this legacy. As with many of Ito’s stories, Sensor takes a simple concept to horrifying extremes. The story centers on the urban legend of angel hair, a phenomenon where the appearance of a U.F.O. will leave behind thin strands of a hair-like substance. In the real world, this is often strings of volcanic ash, but in Sensor, it’s something far more insidious. The hair enhances people’s senses and clues them into vast cosmic knowledge. The human mind wasn’t meant to comprehend such information though, leaving a wake of people twisted till they’re barely human.

While all of Ito’s work deals with vast cosmic forces which humans are powerless to stop, the beings behind Sensor’s most horrific scenes are far more tangible and more horrific. There’s almost a Lovecraftian element to the story. Instead of being completely incomprehensible, these elder god-esque monsters feel like they’re just past understanding. The result is something truly maddening. All of these elements mesh together and make Sensor a compelling mystery, even outside of the horror elements.

As always, Ito’s artwork is the best in the business. Out of context, many of Sensor’s panels would be terrifying in their own right, but within the pages of the book itself, Ito shows his true mastery. Every scare is given proper build-up so that readers are always afraid to turn the page. This build-up is perfected with Sensor. More than just a roller-coaster of cheap scares though, the terror of Sensor will linger with readers long after they put the book down.

All of it combines to make Sensor Junji Ito’s most horrifying manga to date. None of this is to insult any of his other classic stories, but it is clear that Ito has learned a great deal throughout his career and applied it here. Fans of horror or manga would be doing themselves a major disservice in not picking up this title. Junji Ito has earned his reputation as a horror master, and his latest work proves that he has no intention of slowing down. Sensor’s English translation is currently available from Viz Media, and though the read might be horrific, any manga fan brave enough to witness its horrors will find a satisfying and deeply chilling story.
