Colin Trevorrow is returning to the director’s chair after helming Jurassic World, and promises that Jurassic World 3 will be close to the original thrills of the very first Steven Spielberg film. With the release date of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom rapidly approaching, the content for the next entry in the Jurassic Park franchise is already being teased by its maker.

Director Trevorrow first came to the attention of the big studios following the critical acclaim he received with his quirky Indie film Safety Not Guaranteed in 2012. He co-wrote and directed Jurassic World three years later, which took the premise of the original film to its natural conclusion, and set-up the idea of the central theme park finally being realized. Leading into the expected dinosaur rampage, Trevorrow also added some satirical themes about consumerism and further scientific meddling, particularly with the Indominus Rex. It was a huge hit with a worldwide total of over $1.672 billion against a production budget of $150 million, and the film was eventually confirmed to be the first part of a new Jurassic trilogy. Although he didn’t direct the upcoming Fallen Kingdom, Trevorrow also had a hand in writing the story with Derek Connolly as with the previous film. Directed by J. A. Bayona the latest movie promises to mix a variety of genres and tones.

With Trevorrow confirmed as being the director of Jurassic World 3 (official title to be confirmed at a later date), he recently spoke to EW and took the opportunity to describe the film that he’s currently prepping, and how it compares to the previous movies in the franchise:

“If I could contextualize each film, I would say Jurassic World was an action adventure, Fallen Kingdom is kind of a horror suspense film, and Jurassic World 3 will be a science thriller in the same way that Jurassic Park was.”

While some people might say that Jurassic World was pretty close to the tone and content of Jurassic Park anyway, it’s interesting to note Trevorrow’s early indication the plot will be primarily a “science thriller.” The dubious use of genetics as a weapon seems to be a primary part of Fallen Kingdom, so this might indicate a continuing theme that moves away from the Entertainment Park motif. In something of a spoiler, the director also makes a point of stating that Owen (Chris Pratt) and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) will feature in the final entry of the trilogy as well.

Although Trevorrow had a reportedly turbulent experience within the Star Wars universe, his return to the director’s seat in the Jurassic movie universe seems to be a wholly positive one for him, and he says that he’s “grown to love and cherish the value of the gift that I’ve been given with this franchise.” The final part of this Jurassic trilogy is currently due out in June 2021, and obviously further details and conjecture about the plot will have to wait until Fallen Kingdom has been theatrically released. But it sounds like Trevorrow has a solid path for the dinosaurs and knows where he wants to take them. More news on Jurassic World 3 as we get it.
