It was quite a surprise when it was revealed that Jared Leto would be returning to the role of the Joker in Zack Snyder’s Justice League cut, which will be debuting on HBO Max this year. The latest trailer for the film finally shows off Leto’s new look in action.

While it’s not totally clear what part the Joker will play in this four-hour cinematic experience, there’s plenty of fan theories circulating as to why he might be making his return. What’s more, there’s a little bit of evidence from both the trailer itself, as well as other DC materials featuring the clown prince of crime, which could point to how Batman and Joker come together on screen once more.

10 Flashback

The DCEU has already used flashbacks in relation to the Joker and Batman. Suicide Squad had the two meeting very briefly when the dark knight intercepted the Joker’s vehicle. The film also saw flashbacks to Harley’s earlier days with Mr. J.

The film managed to set up these two relationships well through such an easy technique. It’s probable that Batman’s tragic past in relation to the Joker could simply be explored further thanks to some flashbacks to devastating moments in their complex history.

9 Dream Sequence

Another possibility is that the encounter with Joker is all part of an extended dream, or rather nightmare sequence. In Batman V. Superman the caped crusader has a horrible look at what could happen in the future if Darkseid’s plan comes to fruition.

In the Snyder Cut trailer, the scene in which the Joker appears looks very similar to that of the nightmare Batman experienced. It might be that this is another vision of what might happen, with this terrifying villain becoming just an apparition in an already hellish scenario.

8 Arkham Asylum

Arkham Asylum has been depicted a few times in the DC Extended Universe, but it hasn’t been given all the love that it gets in the comics and video games. Indeed, outside of Gotham City itself, Arkham is one of the most important locations in Batman’s world.

He has yet to storm its halls, trying to survive the horrors that dwell within. It would be appropriate for the final meeting of these two iconic foes to be in the location that has become synonymous with the pair. Whether Joker is imprisoned or the lunatic is running the Asylum, it would be an interesting setup for their confrontation.

7 Multiverse

The Three Jokers is a storyline that has been playing out in the pages of DC Comics. The idea is that it brings together three different iterations of the clown prince of crime, who have been fighting Batman for decades. Before its release, one of the theories surrounding these multiple variations was that it was linked to the Multiverse.

With the DC Cinematic Universe heading towards a Multiverse of its own, it’s possible that this isn’t the version of Joker that was seen in Suicide Squad at all and actually a different incarnation from across the Multiverse. That would explain his lack of tattoos and would open up the idea of multiple worlds to Batman ahead of his appearance in The Flash.

6 Timeline Tampering

Speaking of the scarlet speedster, the trailers have been demonstrating that there may be nods to a future storyline of his own: the iconic Flashpoint. The standalone movie is supposed to be exploring this timeline tampering tale and the Joker could be an early sign of this.

It may be that some of the actions of the crimson comet have already had an impact on the time stream. This may be a version of the Joker from the past or future, one that has been inserted into the current time alongside Batman; this would create a really unique dynamic between the pair, as one would almost definitely know more about the other’s fate.

5 A Post Apocalyptic Future

In regards to the time stream, this also could be a trip to the future for Batman, who utilizes the Flash’s abilities to see what happens to the Earth if Darkseid succeeds in his attempts. It could be that the Joker is one of the few that survived the atrocities.

Having the clown prince of crime as an omen of what’s to come is an interesting role to put him in. There may be no more fighting, but instead a shared vision of what has happened to the world. Of course, this version of Joker may revel in the chaos while Batman seeks to stop it from coming to pass.

4 Haunting Batman

The Arkham Knight video game saw the dark knight infected with Joker blood. This resulted in him being able to see the cruel jester wherever he went. Despite the Joker having died in the previous game, he would haunt Batman throughout his final mission.

The Snyder Cut could be setting up a similar story, where Batman is for some reason haunted by the foes of his past. The Joker hasn’t been on the scene in quite some time for Batman, but it would be compelling to see his final confrontation with him actually happen inside Bruce’s mind.

3 The Suicide Squad

There’s a possibility that the Joker has actually been enlisted into the Suicide Squad, after being captured once more. In the trailer he is wearing a SWAT team vest and has his own military-grade weaponry. He could have stolen this or he may have been gifted it from Amanda Waller.

Bringing in a version of the Squad to fight off against Darkseid’s forces would be a completely unexpected choice, but one that put Joker and Batman on the same team for the first time in cinematic history. That’s a very interesting idea to explore further.

2 An Imposter

Jared Leto’s take on the Joker was unlike any other canon version of the character. The iteration put forward in the Snyder Cut seems slightly different and could therefore be an imposter. Countless people have tried to take on the role over the years in the comics, even changing their appearance to appear like the Joker.

On the other hand, someone with shapeshifting abilities may have also stepped into the role but isn’t the true Joker. This decision could lead to a monumental reveal, or could actually be quite disappointing to those who wanted to see the true Joker in action.

1 Jason Todd

There’s been speculation for years that the Joker in Suicide Squad is not the first of the DCEU. He could in fact be another incarnation of the character and plenty of fans have pointed to this possibly being a version of Jason Todd.

This would explain the Robin suit that can be found in Bruce’s Bat Cave and would also provide an answer as to why Joker has that massive J tattoo on his face. This confirmation within their next meeting would definitely be the kind of major reveal that audiences have been waiting for.
