Kevin Smith says that he wasn’t looking forward to DC’s Black Adam film until Dwayne Johnson’s enthusiasm for the role changed his mind. Black Adam is one of four theatrical releases from DC/Warner Bros. next year, with Johnson starting in the lead role as the titular protagonist. The film is expected to revisit the world and lore first established in 2019’s surprise hit, Shazam!. However, Johnson’s film will serve as an origin story for Black Adam, while the direct follow up to Shazam!, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, will release in 2023.

Black Adam is one of the oldest characters in DC’s expansive rogues’ gallery of villains, debuting in the pages of Marvel Family #1 back in 1945 when Shazam was still commonly referred to by his original moniker, Captain Marvel (not to be confused with Marvel Comics’ hero of the same name). While the character initially served as an antagonist to Shazam, more recent incarnations of the character have portrayed him as a maverick anti-hero; he is even a member of the Justice League in the recent ongoing Infinite Frontier relaunch in DC Comics’ mainline continuity. Despite the character’s significance in-universe, he has yet to make his mark in wider popular culture with general audiences. This may be changing soon with Black Adam’s first foray into the DCEU.

On his podcast Fatman Beyond, Kevin Smith recently discussed how his initial apathy towards Black Adam is changing due to Johnson’s excitement over the role. Smith gushes over Johnson’s enthusiasm, saying, “He’s going to make me like Black Adam. A character I’ve never really cared about that much.” Check out his full comments via Comicbook.com below:

Lord knows The Rock has been waiting years to do this. He was so enthusiastic. The hierarchy of the DC Universe is about to change. He is so deeply invested. He’s going to make me like Black Adam. A character I’ve never really cared about that much. His enthusiasm is infectious.

DC recently premiered the first look at Black Adam this past weekend during their annual DC FanDome livestream event. Although Johnson’s face is obscured throughout most of the clip, his sweeping gestures and dramatic poses convey just how invested he truly is in the role. Since the film’s success will likely be contingent on Johnson’s performance, his optimism towards the project bodes well.

Kevin Smith has cultivated a reputation for being highly complimentary toward any and all comic book-related media; as such, his admission that he is not overly fond of Black Adam is notable. Fortunately, Johnson’s sheer excitement seems infectious enough to get Smith’s attention. Hopefully general audiences will be able to feel the same when Black Adam releases next year.
