Jerry Stiller’s role on the hilarious sitcom King of Queens is unforgettable. And yet, there’s plenty of inconsistencies surrounding the character.

Few characters say more with their arms than they do with their words. For as old as the late, great Jerry Stiller was during the production of King of Queens, he was the most kinetic character on-screen by far, waving his arms in frustration every couple of minutes. Being somewhat of a spiritual successor to his character in Seinfeld, Arthur is an arguably better character than Frank Costanza.

King of Queens is a beloved sitcom, one of Kevin James’ best roles, and it features the greatest senile old man on TV. However, there’s still a lot of things that don’t make sense about Arthur, whether it’s his actions that don’t fit with his character, inconsistencies in his background, or his ridiculous schemes.

10 His Piano Skills

Strangely enough, Arthur’s piano skills have come into question on more than one occasion. Arthur has claimed he can do many things over the years, and most of them have turned out to be lies, but in an episode in which Arthur gets his own apartment, Doug is surprised that Arthur can play the piano.

However, later on in the series, Arthur gives children piano lessons without ever teaching them anything, and when he is asked by Deacon to play him something, Arthur can’t play a single note.

9 His Eyesight

Arthur might be over the hill, but when it comes to his eyesight, Carrie’s father’s vision has been the subject of many inconsistencies over the years.

In one episode, when Arthur is on one of his tirades, screaming the house down, he says, “I swore off glasses in 1976,” but ever since the very first episode, the character has been wearing glasses on and off, which makes it one of the most nonsensical things Arthur has ever said, of which there are many.

8 Being Spied On

Being very of its time in the 2000s, there are a lot of episodes of King of Queens that have aged poorly, and this is one of them. After Arthur had been getting out of hand way too often and there is some suspicious activity going on throughout the house, Carrie decides to spy on him by installing a surveillance camera in his room.

The idea of Arthur being spied on when he thinks he has privacy makes no sense, especially as he’s being spied on by his own daughter, as he could be doing anything.

7 Interview References

In another episode that makes Arthur seem much dumber than he actually is, the character lands a great job, only to get fired when his employer finds out that all of his references on his resume, which includes NASA, are fake.

This makes no sense because, as being as old as Arthur is, he has held a number of different jobs that he has talked about at length, so there was never any need to fake his references.

6 His Casino Night

King Of Queens 10 Things That Make No Sense About Arthur

Say what you want about Arthur, as he can be annoying and manipulative at times, and he’s almost always thinking about himself, but he’s also a great host. Here, all these character traits come into play as he decides to host a casino night.

The night is one of his stupidest schemes, as he believes that it’ll make him a ton of money, but the guests end up winning more than losing and, in the end, Arthur can’t afford to pay people their winnings. The scheme is so dumb and though Arthur might be opportunistic, there’s absolutely no way the character is this stupid, to begin with.

5 His Civil War Boxset

Arthur is no stranger to war, and it’s what makes up many of his best quotes. In his room, which just happens to be a dingy, rotten basement, one of the few things Arthur owns is a Civil War box set from PBS.

However, all within the same scene, the box set randomly switches to a Great War collection, and in the next cut, it switches right back to the Civil War box set. Surely the switch could only have been intentional, but there’s never any explanation for it.

4 Not Paying Back Debt

As Arthur isn’t great at handling money, he racked up a significant amount of debt with Spencer and somehow even his walker, Holly. Instead of paying the debt back, Arthur sneaks them into movie screenings at a movie theatre and knocks each trip of his debt.

He does it almost against their will as they keep reiterating they’d rather have cash, but it goes even further when Arthur tries selling them overpriced candy from the inside of his jacket. The whole arc is ridiculous and as much of a penny pincher Arthur is, he’s smarter than to think his friends would be OK with this.

3 Not Being Able To Tell The Difference Between Characters

When Holly enters the kitchen to take Arthur on his daily walk, she strikes a conversation with him just as she usually would. Arthur talks to her just as he would with any conversation, but a couple of minutes passes and he tells her that she was Carrie, his daughter.

It’s clearly a joke at the expense of him being senile, but after years of knowing both of the characters and this problem never having happened before, it doesn’t make any sense, especially as it never happens afterward either.

2 Generally Being A Lunatic

King Of Queens 10 Things That Make No Sense About Arthur

With sitcoms always exaggerating existing stereotypes, whether it’s racial profiling or turning old people into senile lunatics, King of Queens is a culprit of both, especially the latter. Though Arthur is hilarious and his schemes are rather ambitious, he never truly acts in the way that Doug and Carrie expect him to.

In one scene, Carrie doesn’t want to give him the iron because she’s afraid he’ll try to make a grilled cheese sandwich with it. Though it can be funny at times, he’s treated as being much crazier than he actually is.

1 Living With Doug And Carrie

If Arthur really is as mentally unstable as Doug and Carrie say, why have they not sought out professional help? The closest Arthur has ever come to getting help is when Carrie hired Holly to take him out on walks every day.

And even then, Arthur treats her horribly and it’s more like an abusive and toxic relationship than anything. Instead of seeking help, Carrie and Doug treat him like a prisoner, keeping him downstairs in the basement.
