Godzilla: King of the Monsters may have given Godzilla a permanent power boost. If so, it could be of great use to him in his future MonsterVerse battles. Godzilla is already set for a one-on-one showdown the King of Skull Island in Godzilla vs. Kong, and may also clash with Mechagodzilla and potentially others in the same film.

Godzilla is fresh off a huge victory that he picked up over the previous alpha at the end of King of the Monsters. In a rematch with his ancient rival from thousands of years ago, Godzilla defeated Ghidorah in a climactic battle in Boston. However, the fight almost went in Ghidorah’s favor. What saved Godzilla’s life was a heroic sacrifice from Mothra, who infused him with her life essence. With Mothra’s power, he became Burning Godzilla, which was the MonsterVerse’s take on his fiery form from Godzilla vs. Destoroyah. With the upgrade given to him by Mothra, he was able to obliterate Ghidorah with two nuclear pulses.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters director Mike Dougherty confirmed that his burning form was only a “temporary” upgrade, which means he shouldn’t be expected to have it again when he returns in Godzilla vs. Kong [via Twitter]. That being said, there could be some long-term benefits from Mothra’s power transfer. The burning form itself may have been short-lived, but it’s possible that some of the energy she gave him still lingers in his body.

Godzilla keeping a power-up he received from another monster wouldn’t be unprecedented in the Godzilla franchise. In Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II, Godzilla acquired the red spiral heat ray after Rodan made a similar sacrificial move. Rodan’s power gave him this new attack, which he was able to use to take down Mechagodzilla. The power-up also didn’t go away once the fight was over. It was carried over to Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla and Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, where it served as an instrumental weapon in his arsenal and the key to his victories.

If Godzilla’s Mothra upgrade in the MonsterVerse is similar to the Rodan situation in the Heisei series, he could actually be stronger than he was in Godzilla and King of the Monsters. He may even have access to the spiral heat ray as well, but that remains to be seen. Regardless, if Godzilla gained any sort of permanent power boost from Mothra, that would of course be bad news for Kong. Kong is likely to be the underdog as it is, and an upgraded Godzilla would further lower his chances of winning. Kong will have enough difficulties dealing with the power Godzilla already possesses, including his deadly atomic breath. All things considered, Godzilla may not need a power-up to beat Kong, but it would certainly be of help if multiple Titans (and Mechagodzilla) are in play. With a monster war on the horizon in Godzilla vs. Kong, some residual energy from Mothra would be welcome indeed.
