We got a lot to cover here, so we’re just going to dive right in. First off, what the heck is Final Fantasy Versus XIII? It was originally considered as a spinoff game from Final Fantasy XIII. Tetsuya Nomura (the guy in charge of all the Kingdom Hearts games) wanted to make a more action-RPG version of FFXIII, which was then conceived as FFXIII Versus. The game had a 2011 trailer that got Final Fantasy fans pretty excited, but then things happened and the game was canceled.

Only it wasn’t really canceled. Instead, much of Final Fantasy Versus XIII was repurposed. The story was rewritten and many scenes were changed, but what eventually emerged was Final Fantasy XV–a game that sold over 9 million copies and spawned its own movie and mobile game spinoffs and was definitely a huge success for Square Enix.

After Versus XIII was rewritten as Final Fantasy XV, Nomura got to work on Kingdom Hearts III. Apparently, he still has some fondness for his original non-Kingdom Hearts title, since he placed a huge Easter egg in Kingdom Hearts III Re:Mind.

You have to get the secret “good” ending of Re:Mind to see it, which requires completing the DLC story, fighting 13 challenging bosses, and then defeating the secret boss Yozora. If you do, Yozora tells Sora that his powers “aren’t needed yet” before disappearing in a sparkle of lights. Yozora then wakes up in a car and wonders out loud if it was all a dream.

That scene is actually a scene-for-scene recreation of the original Final Fantasy Versus XIII trailer. The only difference is that it’s Yozora in the car and not Noctis. You can see a side-by-side comparison in the video below.

That’s not the only time we’ve seen Yozora in Kingdom Hearts III. In Toy Story World, you can see a fictional game called Verum Rex that features Yozora and a team of heroes as they try to rescue a girl from a bunch of robots.

So what might this mean for the future? Fans are already speculating that this Easter egg might mean that Versus XIII is coming back from the dead. At the very least, it seems like the character Yozora will return in future Kingdom Hearts content, perhaps even in the next mainline game.
