A LEGO set depicting Kirby’s Dream Land could become official if it receives enough support from brick-building fans. Kirby has been a staple in Nintendo’s lineup since the character first appeared almost thirty years ago in the 1992 video game Kirby’s Dream Land for the Game Boy. Kirby remains so popular that the character has also been a choice in Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. series, with some arguing that Kirby is Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s strongest fighter due to its copy move.
The lovable pink puffball has been made available in the form of merchandise many times before. Thanks to the character’s huggable shape and its seemingly-permanent smile, fans have gladly purchased items depicting the character or anything related to it. Japanese store Takara Tomy recently offered a massive plush toy of the character lying on its stomach and snoozing, with marketing photos of people with the Kirby plush showing them using it as a massive pillow. The plush measured 14 inches tall, 23 inches wide, and 31 inches in length, and though the item cost a whopping 11,000 yen (about $105), fans rushed to preorder the large Kirby toy plush in February of this year, proving the character’s popularity.
As reported by Nintendo Life, a Kirby’s Dream Land LEGO set could become a reality if it sees enough attention through the LEGO Ideas initiative. LEGO Ideas lets brick builders design their own dream LEGO set and propose the set as a possible product for official creation and sale. Participants’ dream set must collect votes to pass through several rounds before entering a final round to be judged by a panel of officials from the LEGO Group. JayJayJay built their Kirby – Dream Land Kingdom! LEGO set based on memorable moments from 1992’s Kirby’s Dream Land, and with this set, fans could recreate raiding Castle Dedede and defeating Dark Matter. The set even comes with accessories to give Kirby its famous Copy Ability.
Due to the shape of LEGO bricks, one might expect the LEGO version of Kirby to be cube-shaped like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s cube form of Kirby. However, JayJayJay opted to keep Kirby’s classical spherical shape with their set. The set has over 1,300 pieces, 18 brick-built figures, and even includes multicolored Kirby variants. The idea, first uploaded in 2020, is now nearing the end of its campaign, with less than a month remaining to secure enough votes to make it to the next round of judging. Fans who would like to help JayJayJay’s dream set become a reality can vote for the set via the submissions page.
Whether or not JayJayJay’s Kirby LEGO will become a reality remains to be seen, but should the campaign fail, there’s still lots of Kirby to look forward to in the near future. Nintendo’s next game in the franchise, Kirby and the Forgotten Land launches next year, giving Kirby fans a 3D platforming adventure to get stuck into come spring 2022. Hopefully, next year will also bring news of Kirby’s Dream Land becoming an official LEGO set.
