Pokemon introduced redesigned looks for its creatures based on the region they hail from with Alola Pokemon of Pokemon Sun & Moon, and now, the Galar region looks to have some unique Pokemon variants of its own. This includes Zigzagoon, whose Galar form and evolution Obstagoon bear a strong resemblance to Gene Simmons of the rock band KISS.

The KISS bassist has issued varying responses regarding the homage to his band and personal appearance. Since its reveal, he’s made some comments on the resemblance. Initially, Simmons shared a comment indicating that he was pleased with the homage.

“Pokemon has been a part of our household for decades, ever since our kids first discovered them… and to see Pokemon pay homage to KISS, is flattering.”

However, he also posted about the homage on his own Twitter account, where it looks like he’s not quite so amused by the comparison, simply noting: “Welp.”

The similarities between KISS and a Pokemon might seem odd, but it gets even stranger. The Galar region is intended to be Pokemon’s version of Great Britain, but KISS hails from the United States. In any case, the representation is very close to Gene Simmons’ appearance while performing with KISS, complete with a take on the iconic makeup they wear. The Galar forms even gain a wagging tongue, allowing them to strike a similar pose to the one that Gene Simmons is famed for.

Of course, this isn’t the first time that Pokemon fans have noticed a resemblance between Pokemon and real-life people. Pokemon Sun and Moon’s Yungoos was noted for the swath of yellow hair on its head, making players think it was a reference to Donald Trump. While it turned out that the designers hadn’t intended that similarity, it didn’t stop Norway’s Prime Minister from playing Pokemon GO before meeting the man himself.

So far, only a few Galar region variants have been revealed for Pokemon Sword and Shield, as its release date is still a ways off. Even so, the Gene Simmons lookalike might not be the most startling comparison made so far. Many players have noted that the Galarian version of Weezing bears a strong resemblance to a bong. While likely also not the intention of the designers, many fans will likely think of it that way from now on.

Pokemon Sword and Shield releases on November 15, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
