Knives Out Practices Social Distancing In Altered Poster

The characters of Knives Out practice social distancing in an altered poster for the hit film. An original whodunnit in the tradition of Agatha Christie, the movie stars Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc, a world-famous detective hired to investigate the death of Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer), a highly-successful mystery novel writer found dead shortly after his 85th birthday. The film quickly became a success when it opened last November, with critics praising its subversive storytelling and social commentary. On top of all that, Knives Out boasts an all-star cast chewing the scenery as Harlan’s spoiled family opposite Ana de Armas in a breakout turn as Marta, Harlan’s nurse and the movie’s true hero.

With schools and theaters closed, cities going on lockdown, and people staying home and self-quarantining in the aftermath of the coronavirus outbreak, Knives Out writer-director Rian Johnson has been doing his part to make things a little easier for people in this difficult time. Just last night, he dropped the movie’s full shooting script online for everyone to read for free, along with those for his previous non-Star Wars projects. Even the official Knives Out social media accounts are finding ways to help people staying home pass the time.

The Knives Out Twitter account has posted an altered poster for the film titled “Knives Out: The Social Distancing Cut”. As you can see below, the artwork removes all the characters from the official one-sheet, save for Benoit, Marta, and Harlan’s grandson Hugh Ransom Drysdale (Chris Evans). In keeping with safe social distancing practices, the trio are staying about six feet apart from one another.

This is far from the only coronavirus-inspired movie artwork to make its way online, either. Recently, famous graphic artist BossLogic posted similar social distancing editions of the posters for movies like Avengers: Infinity War, in addition to more recent films like Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and even upcoming ones like No Time to Die (starring Craig as James Bond) and Fast and Furious 9 aka. F9. The latter two blockbusters are among the movies that’ve had their release dates delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, with No Time to Die moving to November and F9 shifting all the way back to April 2021. Of course, Knives Out is already available for people to watch from the safety of their homes, having released on digital and DVD/Blu-ray near the end of February.

With Knives Out grossing more than $300 million at the global box office against a $40 million budget, it’s no surprise Lionsgate has gone and green-lit Knives Out 2. However, much like Christie’s Hercule Poirot novels, Johnson says the sequel will be a standalone story following Benoit as he investigates another mystery separate from the Thrombeys. Some fans are even calling on Johnson to cast his The Last Jedi star Kelly Marie Tran in the Knives Out sequel, after her Star Wars character, Rose Tico, was largely left out of the theatrical version of December’s The Rise of Skywalker. Whether that happens or not, it’s safe to assume Johnson is also social distancing while he keeps his head down and sets to work writing the next installment in the Knives Out franchise.
