Knuckles Brings Out the Absolute Worst in Sonic the Hedgehog

Knuckles might have been fooled into attacking Sonic the Hedgehog twice in Archie Comics’ now-discontinued series, but this eventually led to the Blue Blur resorting to villain-like behavior every time he tangled with the Echidna during the early days of their rivalry.

After Knuckles falsely assumes Sonic is his enemy a second time, the two powered-up creatures cross paths again when Dr. Robotnik accidentally causes a Chaos Emerald to split in half in the Sonic the Hedgehog: Triple Trouble special issue. Sonic goes after one half while Knuckles pursues the other. The two eventually meet with Knuckles automatically assuming that Sonic must be behind the split Chaos Emerald. But Sonic’s reaction is much more damning, using a pun to proclaim how he will kick Knuckles’ own behind, before proceeding to do so with gusto. They only stop pummeling each other upon learning that Dr. Robotnik is to blame.

Sonic later jumps to the conclusion that Knuckles must be up to no good when the Echidna leaves the Floating Island in the Super Sonic v. Hyper Knuckles special issue. Of course, Knuckles is investigating the possibility of there being a Chaos Emerald in the vicinity to help him power his home, but Sonic doesn’t care. Even when Sonic’s girlfriend Princess Sally advises him to talk with Knuckles instead of resorting to meaningless violence, Sonic sucker punches the Echidna. A battle ensues and eventually leads them to a special zone filled with Chaos Emeralds and Power Rings that allows them to transform into super versions of themselves. They become so powerful that the very fabric of that zone’s reality comes undone.

Later in issue #42 of the main comic book series, Sonic visits Knuckles’ Floating Island to ask for a Chaos Emerald to help restore King Acorn whose body had begun crystalizing once Robotnik banished him to their world’s version of Dragon Ball’s Dead Zone. But when Knuckles refuses because his home is powered by Chaos energy, Sonic attacks the Echidna. Sonic eventually leaves but only when he says he’s done fighting. Although they eventually resolve their differences, it’s impossible to ignore that Sonic essentially acts like a villain in each of these cases.

It’s odd that Sonic would distrust Knuckles so vehemently and attack him without warning when the Echidna only misinterpreted Sonic’s presence on his Floating Island as hostile during their first two interactions in Sonic the Hedgehog #13 and the Sonic & Knuckles Special issue. In each of these instances, Knuckles eventually learned the truth about Sonic and teamed up with the hedgehog. If anything, Knuckles just proved himself to be easily manipulable and quick to pass judgment. Nothing suggested that he was sinister except that he was a loner, which is likely where Sonic’s distrust originated.

Interestingly, this isn’t the only ambivalent rivalry fueled by miscommunication and other misunderstandings in Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic would later get entangled in an ongoing feud with Shadow the Hedgehog just because the “Ultimate Lifeform” had a feeling that Sonic was his enemy. Even Silver the Hedgehog crossed swords with Sonic over a mistake. Although odd circumstances, IDW Publishing has seemingly eliminated such rivalries in its continuity. Instead, Shadow and Knuckles are just loners, which can create tension, but never culminates in an all-out brawl, except once between Shadow and Sonic when the Blue Blur wouldn’t let the black hedgehog lay a hand on Dr. Eggman’s alter ego Mr. Tinker. This lack of conflict is undoubtedly one of the reasons why IDW’s series has failed to catch on with readers. In fact, after Sonic and Knuckles eventually made amends in Archie Comics, their rivalry was so compelling that the publisher later thrust the two at each other’s throats again in Sonic vs. Knuckles Battle Royal special issue by having them succumb to an illusion.
