The sun is beginning to set on Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ remunerative empire, now that new titles have dethroned the social simulation on Japanese game rankings chart. As per Famitsu’s chart figures for 6th-12th July, two Konami games, eBaseball Powerful Pro Baseball 2020 for Switch and PS4, are now Japan’s latest bestsellers. The sports video games were released together on July 9, and in only the first week of their release, the games became undisputed blockbusters – perched atop of Japan’s best-selling games list.
In their first week, eBaseball Powerful Pro Baseball 2020 for Switch and PS4 whoppingly sold 94,876 and 91,547 copies respectively. The Konami games knocked off Animal Crossings: New Horizons from the top spot, breaking its long-term winning streak. eBaseball’s Switch iteration plummeted New Horizon’s to the second spot among best-selling Switch games. But, if cumulative sales are considered, New Horizons had another opponent, the wildly popular RPG Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris, which debuted at the third place on the Japanese chart. Animal Crossings: New Horizons had been dominating Japan’s game charts since its launch in March 2020. As of July 12, the game has collectively sold 5,114,386 copies in Japan alone and its merchandising continues at an exponential rate.
eBaseball Powerful Pro Baseball 2020 is a continuation of Konami’s prized Power Pros franchise. Besides a nuanced title rebrand, the baseball video-game has its core gameplay deeply aligned with that of its older counterparts. Power Pros’ signature mawkish capsule-headed players also return in the new game, although they have a highly discernible upgrade in their visual style and animation.
The main selling point of the Konami games is their robust multiplayer disposition. eBaseball Powerful Pro Baseball 2020 allows up to 4 players to simultaneously engage in matches irrespective of the console. In the games, players can choose from several familiar modes, including ‘Power Fes,’ Success,’ ‘Crown Nine,’ ‘My Life,’ and ‘Tokyo 2020 Olympics’. Each mode transfers players’ virtual, deformed alter-egos to a different setting. For instance, in the ‘Success’ mode players walk through three original storylines involving university baseball competitions, whereas in the ‘Crown Nine’ mode gamers coach a team to prepare characters for a high-school sports tournament.
eBaseball Powerful Pro Baseball 2020 may have been a hit to Animal Crossing: New Horizons but the game’s success only means good news for Nintendo Switch. Switch titles are currently sweeping more earnings than any other console games. So if eBaseball Powerful Pro Baseball 2020 continues to generate a steady income in sales for the console, Switch’s dominance in the world of gaming will soon become invincible.
