The exhibitor map for the upcoming E3 trade show has revealed that Konami will be announcing two new games for the Nintendo Switch. All we know about the games is that one will be an action/adventure title, and the other will be some kind of compilation.
Konami was one of the first third-party developers that supported the Nintendo Switch, as Super Bomberman R was one of the launch titles for the system. Super Bomberman R was criticised upon release, due to the fact that it was a full-price game for what was essentially another Bomberman title. Konami has supported the game with free DLC and updates since its release, which has helped to soothe the bad feelings of those who paid for the game at launch.
Super Bomberman R has been the only game that Konami has released for the Nintendo Switch so far, but that is about to change. The success of the Nintendo Switch has helped to inspire other third-party companies (like Capcom and Square Enix) to increase their support for the system and it looks like Konami is following suit.
Konami has been quiet on the Nintendo Switch front so far, so this leaves us a lot of room to speculate about what the two new mystery titles will be.
Action/Adventure
It’s pointless to speculate over whether it is an entirely new game, so we will be looking at Konami’s recent outings and their history of producing games for Nintendo systems.
A New Castlevania Title
Richard Jones is the Brand Manager for the European branch of Konami. He had previously stated in an interview for Miketendo that there was an internal discussion at Konami regarding a brand new Castlevania title for the Nintendo Switch.
It’s possible that the interest in Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night had also prompted talks of a revival of the Castlevania brand, as there is a proven market for the old Metroidvania style of game.
A Port Of Metal Gear Survive
It’s possible that the new game is simply a new game for the Nintendo Switch. The only recent Konami game that fits the description of an “action-adventure” game is Metal Gear Survive, which was released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in 2018.
Metal Gear Survive may prove to be too taxing for the Nintendo Switch’s hardware, but the fact that the system can run Doom means that anything is possible.
Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner M∀RS
An HD remake of Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner was announced at the 2017 Tokyo Game Show. Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner M∀RS is intended to be released for Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 4 in September.
Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner M∀RS is promised to bring scintillating 4k resolution support and promises to be compatible with a number of VR headsets. These facts don’t discount the idea of a Nintendo Switch release, but they would certainly make it seem like the inferior verison of the game.
Compilation
Konami and Nintendo have been working together since the days of the Nintendo Entertainment System, so there are a few possibilities for a compilation game. We likely won’t be seeing any International Superstar Soccer or Yu-Gi-Oh! compilations, but we may see…
Castlevania
A Castlevania compilation might be the most obvious choice for Konami’s mystery game, as many Castlevania games were released for Nintendo systems in the past.
There have been over fifteen Castlevania games released on Nintendo systems (depending on whether you count the spinoffs or not) so there is a lot of potential content for a collection on the Nintendo Switch.
The fact that the Virtual Console won’t be brought to the Nintendo Switch also means that Konami would be more likely to create a collection like this so that they can profit from ports of their older titles.
There have also been rumors of Simon Belmont appearing in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. game for the Nintendo Switch, which means that Konami would want to capitalize on any new interest in the character.
Metal Gear Solid
A Metal Gear Solid compilation for the Nintendo Switch might seem like a farfetched idea at first, but it’s not outside the realm of possibility.
The Metal Gear Solid HD Collection was released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2011, which means that hardware and licensing wouldn’t be an issue. This collection also included ports of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, so it would be classed as having five games.
The idea of a Metal Gear Solid compilation for the Nintendo Switch would likely only happen if Solid Snake appeared in the Super Smash Bros. games, which may be a distant possibility.
Bomberman
Super Bomberman R was a success for the Nintendo Switch, despite initial grumbling over the price. This may have been due to the fact that there weren’t many games available for the Nintendo Switch (Breath of the Wild notwithstanding) so some of those sales were likely motivated by a desire to own more titles for the new Nintendo system.
The Bomberman series first took off due to the Nintendo Entertainment System, where it became one of the best multiplayer games on the system. There have been a lot of Bomberman games released on Nintendo systems over the years, so it would be easy enough for Konami to find enough titles to fill a compilation.
It’s questionable whether a Bomberman compilation would sell well on the Switch, considering the fact that most of the games in the series are similar in terms of their gameplay and there is already a perfectly adequate Bomberman title already available on the system.
Contra
The Contra series started out in the arcades but it first became a household name due to the ports that appeared on the Nintendo Entertainment System. We would see several Contra games released on different Nintendo consoles, which have tended to be the best entries in the series.
A Contra compilation would likely have to skip the PlayStation entries from the series, but those were the 3D ones that weren’t as well-received as the original Contra games, so their absence wouldn’t be much of a loss.
