With the social distancing movement in full swing, gamers are relying now more than ever on virtual ways to connect with friends. The recently released KOONGYA Draw Party is a mobile game that does just that in the form of pun puzzles. Oh, and there are also some food emojis turned into kawaii creatures that cheer you on. Sound intriguing?

From its adorably cheerful and calming aesthetic to its display of clever and witty puns, KOONGYA Draw Party is a fun and silly way to pass the time.

Let’s Draw!

KOONGYA Draw Party is a mobile game from Netmarble where players must solve timed puzzles in the form of charming doodles that translate into clever puns. Players are presented with a scrambled letter bank and empty spaces to spell out the mystery phrase. Each drawing is speed drawn by some adorable little creatures (the eponymous “Koongya”), and players must guess each pun before the timer runs out. Players can use different aids to help them out (e.g. they can get incorrect letters removed from the bank or get extra time to solve the puzzle), but note that you’re only offered a limited number of these benefits before you’ll need to spend real money on them.

The game offers three distinct modes of gameplay: Stage, Adventure, and Party mode. Stage mode progresses linearly, with each drawing developed and drawn by the Koongya. As you progress through each stage, you’ll receive additional benefits, like different forms of in-game currency or additional aids.

Adventure mode allows players to try out puzzles drawn by other KOONGYA players, utilizing a map reminiscent of Pokémon Go. Players can also use this mode to test their artistic abilities and draw their own puzzles for other gamers to try out.

Party mode allows one player to host up to eight people for a KOONGYA drawing party. Players can choose between a Rotational party (all players take a turn to create a puzzle), Winner party (the winner of each puzzle gets to draw next), or a Quiz Room (player hosts their own rotational party and can recruit players and also chat with them).

To access a puzzle in any of these modes, players will need to pay with “Pencils,” the main in-game currency for this game. Free pencils are supplied to players after a certain amount of time, but players can also trade other forms of in-game currency to receive more. Otherwise, they can purchase extras through microtransactions.

Puns Upon Puns

Some people might expect a game nearly entirely reliant on puns to get old pretty quickly. And sure, some of the puns do fall a bit into the “dad joke” level of caliber. But amazingly, KOONGYA Draw Party is extremely addictive and legitimately fun. The puns and their corresponding puzzle drawings are clever enough to keep players on their toes (some of my personal favorites included: some pepper-shaped bells, aka, “Bell Pepper,” or an assured-looking redheaded girl pointing at an Egyptian temple, aka, “Shirley Temple”).

Players start off with around five pencils each time they log in, with one pencil equating to one puzzle. Every thirty minutes, the game will spawn a new pencil, so it’s possible players won’t need to drop any additional dollars on the game. But if you want any more, players will have to cough up some “diamonds,” the premium form of in-game currency that can be replenished via microtransactions.

So Kawaii!

If pun puzzles weren’t enough of an incentive, don’t forget about the adorable Koongya creatures themselves. As stated above, the eponymous “Koongya” are little creatures that look like kawaii food emojis come to life. Some adorable ones include Cherry Koongya, Riceball Koongya, and even Turnip Koongya.

As players progress throughout the game, they’ll be able to collect each of the Koongya by clearing stages and leveling up. Plus, they can even dress them up in special costumes and read up on their backstories to find out more about each little guy.

Players can select from their Koongya inventory and pick one creature to be their “main,” who will sit on their home screen offering feel-good tips and tricks, as well as general sweet reminders to players as they advance through stages. When playing Stage Mode, a player’s main Koongya will also be the one to draw the puzzle.

The Koongya are inarguably adorable, reminiscent of chibi tsum tsum figures. Combined with the game’s fun and cheerful score and cute sound effects, you’re bound to smile while playing.

Not Everyone Is An Artist

When it comes to deciding between which mode to play, Stage mode is easily the best mode out of all three and most likely the one players will spend the most time on. While I tried my hand at some of the player-designed puzzles in Adventure and Party mode, I found those to be a lot harder to guess. Not everyone can be an artist, but it can get a little frustrating when you’re spending your in-game currency on some less-than-average drawings. And as someone who is heavily lacking in the visual arts department, I had little confidence in creating my own puzzles with my free-hand artistic abilities.

However, the Party mode is a great option for a fun co-op with friends, and as long as you don’t mind average drawings from some less artistic players, could be a great potential game night idea.

Kooky for KOONGYA

For a free mobile game, KOONGYA Draw Party is a great way to pass the time. It’s cute, it’s cheerful, it’s filled with a good number of “dad joke”-level puns – truly, what more do you need?

An iOS version of KOONGYA Draw Party was downloaded by TheGamer for this review. KOONGYA Draw Party is currently available for iOS and Android devices through the App Store and Google Play, respectively.
