Lady Gaga has defended her approach to portraying the role of Patrizia Gucci in the recent Ridley Scott crime-drama, House of Gucci. Scott’s latest film hit cinemas earlier in November, and is an adaptation of real life events. It follows the Gucci family as they wrestle for control over the famous fashion brand, and centers on Patrizia Gucci’s attempted murder of her husband Maurizio Gucci, played by Adam Driver.

As well as being an internationally renowned singer and songwriter, Lady Gaga is also an award winning actor. Before appearing in House of Gucci, Lady Gaga starred in Bradley Cooper’s 2018 remake of the romantic musical A Star Is Born, portraying the film’s lead. The singer was nominated for multiple awards for her performance, including the year’s Academy Award for Best Actress alongside industry heavyweights Glenn Close, Olivia Colman, and Melissa McCarthy.

Now, in an interview on the The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the actor sheds light on her performance as Patrizia Gucci. Lady Gaga explained that she takes a Method approach to acting, meaning that even when not on set and shooting, she would be aiming to stay in character as Patrizia Gucci. Lady Gaga stated that the Method approach helped her to “[commit herself] to the art on a cellular level,”. The actor also spoke about how the technique assisted her in developing her Italian accent. “I think there’s a sort of idea around method acting that it’s crazy and that we’re crazy. But I think that for those of us that commit ourselves to method acting, that there’s something about us that’s fully committing ourselves to the art on a cellular level. We’re deeply entrenched in this immersive experience. I feel it when I sing, I feel it when I make music, and I feel it when I’m acting. When I sing jazz music, I consider it a great privilege and honor to take with me all the great musicians of the past and bring forth this great music.

“So I do the same when I’m working on characters. And with Patrizia, [in Patrizia’s accent] it was much easier for me to stay in character all the time. When I called my mother, when I called my father… The way that I would explain it to you, is if I were to call you on the phone I would have spoken to you just like this. I wouldn’t have pretended that I’m Patrizia, you just would have been like ‘Oh f–k, I’m on the phone with Patrizia.’

“In another way, what it did for me is like singing, like a musical instrument, like a muscle, it allowed me to become comfortable with speaking in a way where it would be natural to me. So that I could be in a scene like the one that you just saw and I could speak naturally to the actor as opposed to playing an instrument I don’t know… But my point is that I really wanted to do a good job and staying in character for me was essential. And I’m not saying that that’s the way to do it. It’s just how I do it.”

The Method approach to acting has become infamous in recent years, and as Lady Gaga explains, is often considered to be a “crazy” undertaking. Jared Leto (Lady Gaga’s co-star in House of Gucci) notably used the Method approach for his portrayal of the Joker in 2016’s Suicide Squad, sending unpleasant packages to his co-stars while trying to become immersed in the role. However, as is clear from Lady Gaga’s explanation, the Method approach can be a useful tool for some actors. While her Italian accent has been criticized by some, including a dialect coach, the approach allowed Lady Gaga to become comfortable with the accent and focus on other aspects of her performance.

Although reception to the film has been mixed, Lady Gaga’s portrayal of Patrizia Gucci has been universally praised by critics and fans alike, prompting speculation that the performance could earn the singer her second Academy Award nomination. House of Gucci is Scott’s second film of the year, following The Last Duel which became a huge box office flop. The director has already begun working on his next project, and fans of Lady Gaga will hope that she can find her next role soon, as well.
