Edgar Wright’s Last Night in Soho is an exhilarating and breathtaking psychological horror in which an aspiring fashion designer somehow finds herself in the 1960s and witnesses the murder of an ambitious singer. Of course, not everything is as it seems and the story only becomes more intriguing from there.

Ellie must demonstrate her determination and fearlessness to understand the subtle mysteries behind her freakish nightmare. Bravery is boundless in Last Night in Soho, as other characters also step up to showcase their strength and courage and support Ellie in her spine-chilling journey.

7 Jack

As the antagonist in the movie, Jack (Matt Smith in one of his best roles) is the handsome and charming manager who steals Sandie’s heart, especially since he can make her a superstar. Initially, it seems that he wanted to help Sandie fulfill her dreams as a singer, even getting her an audition.

However, Jack deceives Sandie into a lifestyle in which she exploited. He continues to demonstrate his nefarious nature in which he threatens, manipulates, and hurts Sandie. Therefore, Jack lacks any noble qualities, given his mistreatment of women. He only cares for himself and his pleasures, which has nothing to do with bravery.

6 Jocasta

There are many reasons why Jocasta (Synnøve Karlsen) was Ellie’s short-term roommate. From the moment they meet, she seeks attention by moving the spotlight from Ellie to herself, claiming to also have lost her mother at a young age and that her uncle died from suicide. However, this was only the beginning of Jocosta’s ugly side.

Jocasta unnecessarily feels threatened by Ellie and belittles her at any opportunity as a way to feel superior. She even displays jealousy when a teacher complements Ellie’s ’60s-inspired designs, which instigates further bullying. To be brave in some form, one must show some mercy towards the vulnerable, but Jocasta never displays this towards Ellie. Therefore, it shows her lack of bravery, but her presence also serves as a subtle but overlooked detail in Last Night in Soho.

5 Margaret “Peggy” Turner

Peggy (Rita Tushingham) does not appear in the movie too often, but this doesn’t undermine the challenges she has faced, particularly after her daughter took her own life. Peggy raised Ellie as her daughter and acted as both a mother and grandmother, so they are extremely close.

Given her motherly instincts, Peggy expresses her concerns about letting Ellie go into a different world on her own, especially since a similar path took her daughter’s life. Like any brave parent letting their children go off to college, she has to overcome those anxieties so that Ellie can grow to become independent and fulfill her dreams as a fashion designer. Although she does cave in, she still calls her granddaughter to check on her well-being, just like any concerned parent.

4 Lindsey/The Silver-Haired Gentleman

For most of the film, The Silver-Haired Gentleman (Terence Stamp) comes off as a mysterious fellow who intimidates Ellie. However, there is quite a false trail regarding his identity. In a shocking plot twist, it was revealed that he was a “copper” named Lindsey.

Despite the false assumption that he was Jack, he is perhaps the antithesis. Unlike most men who encountered Sandie, he wanted to help Sandie escape her mess when she was at her lowest point. It even appears that he knew the truth about Sandie’s murderous acts and managed to cover up any suspicion from his colleagues. Despite first impressions, Lindsey upheld his gentlemanly persona by showing compassion to the vulnerable, like Sandie, something that was very brave indeed.

3 John

Unlike most people in London, John (Michael Ajao) is the only person who shows compassion, making him one of the best characters in Last Night in Soho. As Ellie’s only friend, he displays gentleman-like behavior and kindheartedness, which are just a few indications of his gallant nature.

Even when Ellie goes haywire, John expresses no hesitancy in believing her claims and assists in her cause to find the truth. Of course, one of his final acts is to help Ellie escape London, and he took a stab to the gut for it. John was a gentleman who gave Ellie space when needed and made sure he was always by her side, displaying bravery, honesty and altruism.

2 Sandie/Alexandra Collins

Despite the glamour of the Swinging 60s, it was not an easy time for a young woman like Alexandra Collins (Diana Rigg). Going by the alias Sandie (Anya Taylor-Joy), she had aspirations of becoming a singer, but her naivete set her on a much different path. But rather than letting a repulsive man like Jack control her forever, she found the determination to defend herself, which alone is a significant brave act. However, her newfound courage and fearlessness led to a series of mass murders, so her actions may have gone too far.

These events were crucial to transform Sandie into Alexandra Collins, in which killing her victims meant killing her dark past. As Alexandra, she had more experience in this ruthless world and was no longer fearful of powerful men. Of course, she is one of the most intelligent characters for avoiding any suspicions of her crimes. Even though she was relentless in her actions, she was a broken soul who needed to defend herself, which explains her final fearless act of dying in the fire. She exemplifies the difficulties that women experienced, especially during the 1960s. She had to show immense bravery, and this explains how she managed to live a long life.

1 Eloise “Ellie” Turner

Ellie (Thomasin McKenzie) already took her first brave act by moving from the quiet countryside to crowded north London. She found confidence and independence to move forward into a new chapter of her life, just like any young college student. But this journey was not easy, as a timid Ellie dealt with bullying from her roommate, and moving into a new apartment was a bold move. Little did she anticipate traveling into the lavish 1960s lifestyle of Sandie, but the glamor was short-lived. She slowly loses her grip on reality as she witnesses Sandie’s downfall and perceived murder.

The trauma consumes her to the point of seeing ghosts, so she tries to seek justice for Sandie. These events transform Ellie from a shy and innocent girl to a courageous woman, as she confronts who she assumed was Sandie’s murderer. Even though Sandie’s demise was far from the truth, she did everything to defend herself from Alexandra and do what was righteous.
