Former Rockstar Games illustrator Mark Scicluna designed comic book cover art for The Last of Us that impressed series Co-Creator and Director Neil Druckmann. Since The Last of Us’ Ellie is an avid reader of science fiction comics, the brand’s origin story being reimagined in Silver Age-style cover art makes all the sense in the world. Of course, TLoU itself has enjoyed success in the comic medium as well, thanks to the four-issue miniseries, The Last of Us: American Dreams, that fan from April 2013 to July 2013.

After wrapping production on Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, a separate Naughty Dog team led by Neil Druckmann and Game Director Bruce Straley set to work on the project that would eventually become known as The Last of Us. Its June 2013 launch quickly captured the hearts and minds of millions, serving as the perfect swan song for the PlayStation 3. Barring the early 2014 release of the well-received Left Behind story expansion, TLoU stars Ellie and Joel didn’t reappear until the tail end of the PS4 generation with the launch of The Last of Us Part II. While it’s fun to look ahead at what a Part III could offer, it can’t hurt to also take a step back to look at the franchise’s in-universe origins.

Today, November 9, illustrator Mark Scicluna showcased an image of his The Last of Us fan art, which depicts a poignant scene from the first game’s prologue in a Silver Age comic cover. The scene of Austin, Texas in shambles sits in the background as the foreground focuses on Joel, Sarah, and Tommy attempting to escape the chaos. Stark lines, bold lettering, and text calling attention to “…The Night All Hell Broke Loose” is perfectly reminiscent of classic pulp adventures of the 1950s and 1960s. And Scicluna’s work quickly caught the eye of Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann, who quote tweeted the stunning artwork with a shocked face emoji. See Scicluna’s remarkable art in the following post:

Suffice it to say, this would make for an awesome poster or t-shirt art. It’s also a reminder of how well the world of The Last of Us translates to comics. As of now, however, there’s nothing to suggest the series will revisit the medium anytime in the near future.

TLoU’s future in games remains uncertain for the time being. While Druckmann previously confirmed that he and Part II Co-Writer Halley Gross once broke story ideas for a third entry, such a narrative may never see the light of day.
