Square Enix has released a new trailer for Final Fantasy VII Remake that focuses on Aerith Gainsborough, the flower girl from Midgar who may just be the key to saving the world from Sephiroth.

Aerith is one of the most beloved characters in the Final Fantasy series, and fans were once obsessed with trying to save her from her infamous fate in the original Final Fantasy VII. It got to the point where urban legends concerning outlandish ways to save her outnumbered the bizarre methods of catching Mew in Pokémon Red & Blue during the early days of internet forums. The sight of Aerith in the trailers for Final Fantasy VII Remake was an incredible moment for fans of the original Final Fantasy VII, even though it came with a certain amount of heartbreak, as they have to steel themselves to relive the pain they felt back in the late ’90s.

The official Final Fantasy VII Remake Twitter page has uploaded a new character trailer for Aerith, which shows off her new powers and the spectral foes that will be pursuing her in the expanded story of the game. Aerith was a powerful magic-user in Final Fantasy VII, but her magical abilities will take on a new form in Final Fantasy VII Remake, as she can now wield lightning spells as part of her Tempest ability. Aerith can use the Tempest spell to create a crystal of lightning magic, which detonates when thrown at enemies.

The Aerith trailer also shows the new ghostly enemies that will be appearing in Final Fantasy VII Remake. The story of Final Fantasy VII Remake is an expanded version of the Midgar section of the original game, which now includes ghostly enemies that are seen focusing on Aerith, as well as attacking AVALANCHE at the Seventh Heaven. It’s possible that these ghosts are linked to the Cetra and are specifically pursuing Aerith, as they are first seen attacking her and Cloud.

It seems that Aerith’s abilities and role have been expanded in Final Fantasy VII Remake, which makes us wonder how Square Enix will handle the rest of her story in the later remake games. Is it possible that Aerith will be spared from her fate? No, but it’s fun to speculate.

Final Fantasy VII Remake will be released for PlayStation 4 on March 3, 2020.
