It’s-a me, more updates on Super Nintendo World in Japan!

Super Nintendo World is an extension of several Universal Studio theme parks; locations will include Osaka, Orlando, and Hollywood. These additions have been in the works since the deal was made back in 2015, but construction and therefore opening dates have been delayed due to the pandemic. The theme parks will include some of the darlings of the Nintendo world, with Mario almost certainly working as the Mickey Mouse-like face of the park.

Just a few weeks ago, some images were leaked of the construction zone and the huge amount of progress that has been made despite the shutdowns. The park now includes what look like rolling green hills, fitting of most levels in any Super Mario Bros. beginning world, a multi-tiered platform with mystery blocks, a waterfall, Bowser’s castle, Peach’s castle, and a few other promising structures.

Now, thanks to @usj1 on Twitter, we’ve got an even closer look at what’s going on inside Super Nintendo World. There are cloud platforms, a Thwomp guarding part of the platform, and some huge spinning coins. @usj1 even provided a video of the coins in action.

Super Nintendo World Osaka is still listed as being slotted for a 2020 opening date, but whether COVID-19 will allow people to visit and live their nerd fantasy is still uncertain. The size of these coins in real life really makes you think about how big they were in the game, considering that they were pretty much the size of Mario’s torso in most animations. It’s not totally clear what purpose these spinning coins will serve, but it would be fun to try to dodge them Wipe Out style. If this tiered platform is playable it does look like grabbing those coins and scaling some platforms are the last step to grabbing that end of level flag.

This does seem to be quite a lofty series of platforms. If it is more than part of the scenery any running will probably be for the adrenaline junkies out here and for those willing to sign a waiver understanding that there are no real one-up mushrooms or power-ups of any kind provided on the course.
