Law & Order: SVU creator Dick Wolf weighs in on whether or not Benson and Stabler should become an official romantic couple. From the very beginning of the long-running police procedural, the bond between partners Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) has been the heart of the show. The two characters cultivated a deep working relationship that would sometimes drift towards the not-so-professional up until Meloni departed Law & Order: SVU in season 12. At the time, fans were devastated, but their broken hearts have since been mended by his return in season 22.
Now that Meloni leads his own show, Law & Order: Organized Crime, he’s made frequent visits to SVU that have largely served to stir up excitement among those who ship Stabler and Benson together. The tragic death of Stabler’s wife in Law & Order: SVU season 22 seemingly opened a door for the former partners to explore a romantic connection, and there have been several hints to such a thing stirring since then. For one thing, Stabler outright said he loved Benson in a heated intervention with his family. Most recently, the full contents of Stabler’s letter from last season were made public, and they acknowledged some lingering feelings between the two.
However, while the “Bensler” shippers might be filled with hope over an upcoming romantic relationship, Wolf himself is a bit more cool on the idea. Speaking to ET about his television empire, Wolf weighed in on a potential coupling between the two SVU leads. He isn’t necessarily against it, but he believes that the build-up is better. Wolf said:
I don’t anticipate them running off and living together as much as the audience would like that. Anticipation is the most exciting part of most relationships… the chase is always better. The shows are good and having them onscreen together I think is enough. I don’t think you have to push it to the next level. At least not this year. I mean, as I said, you never know what the future holds.
Wolf, of course, kicked off the entire Law & Order franchise with the original series in 1994 and has overseen every single spin-off since then. He created SVU, though now it’s Warren Leight who serves as showrunner. Nevertheless, if there’s anyone who could be considered an authority on these characters, it’s probably Wolf. He recently got another major win in the form of a season 21 renewal for the original Law & Order, which brings the series back to television eleven years after it went off the air.
Even among fans, the concept of Stabler and Benson as a romantic pair can be a divisive topic. There are just as many who would like them to remain friends as there are those who would love to see them kiss. As the new seasons of Law & Order: SVU and Organized Crime have only just begun, there’s still plenty of opportunities ahead to see where the writers have chosen to steer these two. If it was up to Wolf, he’d drag the lead-up out for as long as possible, so perhaps fans better brace themselves for a long waiting period. Benson and Stabler might end up taking their time.
