Riot is interested in the prospect of both movies and TV shows for League of Legends, although getting a game into theaters is a tough proposition.

Riot Games is on the hunt for two people to spearhead efforts into live-action movies and TV shows for League of Legends, its still-popular MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) series for PC, Mac, and mobile. Once hired, these people could expand the franchise’s popularity even further, although game licenses are notoriously difficult to bring to the big screen.

League of Legends first launched in 2009, modeled largely after the original MOBA, Defense of the Ancients, though it has since evolved in its own direction. Its fantasy setting has mostly sat secondary to gameplay – which has even become a big-budget staple of the esports world- and it has become one of the most popular PC games ever. This isn’t the first time Riot has tried to expand beyond the video game sphere with League of Legends, as Riot did collaborate with Marvel on a series of comics released in 2018. Riot is also currently developing an animated show called Arcane, due later in 2021.

The job listings are titled Global Head of Live-Action Film and Global Head of Live-Action TV, respectively, and were first spotted by IGN. Both roles will be based out of Los Angeles – often a must to make connections in Hollywood – and require eight years of experience in entertainment development and production. In fact Riot is aiming for people who already have established networks in the industry, and are “well-versed” in A-list artists, actors, writers, directors, and producers. That demand could prove a difficult proposition, since many such people are being recruited by studios and streaming services like Apple TV+ and Disney+ get off the ground.

It may also take a couple of years or more to get live-action material produced, particularly when it comes to game licenses. The Uncharted movie, for example, is set to premiere in February 2022, but has been in the works since at least 2008. Successful adaptations are even rarer. Hits like Sonic the Hedgehog are outnumbered by (financial) failures like Assassin’s Creed and Warcraft. This is despite the involvement of A-list talents, such as actor Michael Fassbender or director Duncan Jones.

Riot’s fortunes aren’t dependent on film or TV, though. League of Legends has separately spawned a card game, a K-Pop band, and at least two upcoming games. The first is Ruined King, a single-player RPG in which players guide a party in the Shadow Isles, while the other is an unnamed online RPG. Equally mysterious is a fighting game that was first teased in 2019 by Tom Cannon, who helped co-found the EVO fighting tournaments the game will almost inevitably appear at. With Riot already expanding its reaches beyond the MOBA sphere, a move into live-action television shouldn’t shock anyone.
