The latest Pokémon GO loading screen reveals that Team Rocket might be about to provide players with boss battles.

Courtesy of r/TheSilphRoad, Reddit’s premier Pokémon GO subreddit, we get a sneak peek at an upcoming loading screen warning players to always be aware of their surroundings lest they accidentally wander into Team Rocket-controlled territory. Then you might have to fight Giovanni and his many henchmen!

That’s the message we’re getting from this leaked image which clearly shows Viridian City Gym and the Team Rocket boss. Those born after 1998 might not recognize this guy as the original villain from Pokémon Red & Blue, the criminal mastermind who sought to steal everyone’s Pokémon for profit.

We’re still not quite clear on how Giavani planned to profit from all these Pokémon–you’d think that the food bill alone would be murderous.

Viridian Gym was originally a ground-based gym in Gen 1 but later became a nondescript gym under control of Blue after Gen 2. Pokémon GO doesn’t really follow the classic Pokémon timeline, but it seems like classic plots are getting tied into the modern mobile game anyways.

Ever since Team Rocket started showing up last summer, Shadow Pokémon have become the latest craze to hit Pokémon GO. The image shows a bunch of Shadow ‘Mons that have already been released, but a few new ones are visible, including Shadow Mawile, Absol, and Meowth. It’s quite possible that Meowth’s evolved form will also become available in Shadow-mode just as soon as this update actually arrives.

But what about this Viridian Gym? Could this mean that Team Rocket will start taking over gyms as well as Pokéstops? Almost certainly. We might even be battling it out against Giovanni himself.

The Pokémon GO official Twitter account also recently revealed a set of images showcasing each of Team Rocket’s newest henchpeople. Their names are Sierra, Aro, and Cliff. We have no idea what this might entail, but it could mean that Giovanni isn’t quite ready to get his hands dirty yet and will instead send these folks out to terrorize trainers.

We’ll be sure to find out more as we get more tweets.
