The Legend of Korra is a very different story from Avatar: The Last Airbender even if it’s the sequel and set in the same world. However, while Legend of Korra often gets hate it doesn’t deserve over some aspects, there are overall some things about the series that haven’t aged very well.

While many of the issues with the series were resolved in the last two seasons, earlier seasons struggled with love stories and even with having a female Avatar as the main character. Here are the things about the series that haven’t aged well socially.

10 Korra is made to be much more of a damsel in distress than Aang

This is a complicated point because both of these characters are often put in positions where they need help or to be saved.

However, Korra often seems to be put in situations where she is captured way more often than Aang. This isn’t to say Aang never needs rescue, but there is an overall tone with Korra seemingly needing to be helped more in this way than Aang.

9 The love triangle

One thing that many fans find frustrating about the first couple of seasons of the series is the love triangle between Korra, Mako, and Asami.

Fans felt it was a tired trope that pit the two main female characters against one another over a man, and they felt it wasn’t very progressive or feminist. In fact, it seemed like a step backward from the overall female representation of The Last Airbender. Luckily, this was fixed in the final seasons.

8 The glorification of capitalism

One thing that many people loved about The Last Airbender was that it showed things such as the horrors of imperialism and war.

However, Legend of Korra is set further in the future in a world filled with big cities and a more recognizable capitalist society. However, it presents all of this as progress instead of showing the downsides and flaws of this kind of system, and it doesn’t feel as interesting because of this.

7 Korra and Asami are barely confirmed in the actual show

One thing that Legend of Korra gets a lot of credit for is being one of the first animated children’s shows to have the main character be a queer woman. While this is a great thing, and the Korrasami relationship is important, they don’t get together until the last scene of the final season.

While their relationship has been explored more in the comics, as far as the actual show is concerned, these two are rarely shown to be together at all. They don’t even get to kiss which is really frustrating given how many straight couples kissed. This was a problem the studio had, however, not so much the creators.

6 Mako’s police storyline and betraying Korra

Upon rewatching the series now that it’s been put on Netflix, new and old fans alike are examining the show with a more mature viewpoint that looks at current political events. So, the overall emphasis in the early seasons especially on the police force isn’t a great look in this political climate.

Mako becoming a cop and falling in line with what everyone in authority told him is upsetting, and he ends up betraying Korra because of this, too.

5 The series puts an emphasis on relying on cops and the military

While The Last Airbender was a story that felt like a bunch of young people banding together to make the world a better place, Legend of Korra makes the characters rely too much on established hierarchical power structures.

Whether it’s relying on cops or military forces, there’s not enough exploration of the flaws in these structures. But, once again, this largely applies to the first and second season.

4 The political messages surrounding Amon are a mess

While Amon had an interesting storyline and villain, the social messages surrounding him were all over the place. While it was interesting to show a villain who had some good ideas about equality for non-benders but used the wrong methods to achieve that, the show veered too much into the territory of making people who fight for equality look like hypocritical villains.

If handled better, Amon could have been as interesting and complex as a villain as someone like Killmonger, but instead, the series made the cops look better than those protesting for equal rights.

3 Aang being a negligent father

One thing that has caused a lot of discussion and division among fans of these two series is the character development of Aang. Many feel it’s out of character that Aang would be a negligent father who favored Tenzin over his other children because he was an air bender.

While this might not seem like a big deal, it changed Aang from the gentle, equality-loving hero he was into an almost patriarchal, cold, and distant figure.

2 Toph becoming a cop

Unfortunately, there are a lot of confusing messages about the police force, protesting, and authority figures in Legend of Korra, and they definitely are too close to real-life events to feel unimportant.

Given that Toph grew up in such a strict household and society and was rebellious, it’s strange that she somehow became the leader of Republic City’s first police force with her daughter following in her footsteps. It’s out of character, and many fans are rightfully upset that beloved heroes in fantasy series often grow up to work for the state.

1 Lots of patriarchal figures telling Korra what to do

This is another subtle point that is more obvious when paying attention. Because of the different story setups of the two series, Aang and his friends get to travel the world in relative freedom from adults and save the world on their own. While Aang had mentors, he is rarely stopped from doing what needs to be done or controlled. Korra, however, is trained from a young age and has strict standards.

Then, she basically has to be parented by Tenzin, who can be rather patriarchal even if benevolently, even though she’s much older than Aang was in his story. Not to mention that her father can come across as too overbearing at times, too.
