Strong villains are always one of the major factors in making a show memorable. The four major villains in The Legend of Korra had strong character development and displayed brutal and nearly effective methods to carry out their evil plans. In some ways, these villains were a bit darker than the ones in Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Both shows had extremely high stakes that were raised each season. They’re both really great to rewatch, especially considering they’re both getting pretty old now. From suffocating world leaders to destroying cities, here are the 10 worst things the villains have ever done in The Legend of Korra.

10 Zaheer Kills The Earth Queen

The Earth Kingdom was falling apart and their leader, the Earth Queen, wasn’t really taking any measures to prevent that from happening. Zaheer, being very against the failed leadership of the world, decides to take it upon himself to kill her. He does so in what may be the most brutal way possible. Zaheer takes the air out of the Earth Queens body and suffocates her with it. This may have been a little too much for a show aimed at teenagers but it definitely proved to be a jaw-dropping moment.

9 Amon Lies To The People

Legend of Korra 10 Worst Things The Villains Have Ever Done

The reveal that Amon wasn’t a nonbender but rather a waterbender using bloodbending to take bending away from people was a huge twist. It was also devastating to see his followers be so deceived after feeling like they had a leader that understood them. His movement was terrible, but the idea had some meaning to it. Some nonbenders were oppressed by benders and Amon’s movement gave them something to believe in. For the whole thing to be a lie was one of the biggest moments in Book 1 of The Legend of Korra.

8 Kuvira Lays Waste To Republic City

Legend of Korra 10 Worst Things The Villains Have Ever Done

In the finale of Book 4, Kuvira and her army march on Republic City with the Spirit Weapon to make it apart of her new Earth Empire as it was built on Earth Kingdom land. When the city refuses to surrender, Kuvira attacks, destroying buildings and creating a huge mess. It’s a shame considering that her actions can somewhat be justified as she wanted to create a nation that wouldn’t feel vulnerable to threats. Thankfully, in the end, Kuvira came to understand the monster she became and got a bit of redemption, but it doesn’t change the terrible deeds she committed.

7 Amon Takes Lin’s Earth Bending Away

Legend of Korra 10 Worst Things The Villains Have Ever Done

Season 1 did a great job of developing Lin into a likable character after first showing her as someone that seemed to dislike Korra. When Amon takes Lin’s bending away, he now seems to pose a true threat to not only Republic City, but to the world.

Lin was the first line of defense for the city but she was helpless when it came to stopping Amon. This scene was brutal when the episode first aired as it was very unclear if she would ever get her bending back. Thankfully Korra is able to restore it after she stops Amon for good.

6 Hiroshi Sato Betrays Asami Sato

Legend of Korra 10 Worst Things The Villains Have Ever Done

Hiroshi Sato is first introduced in the show as the father of Mako’s love interest, Asami. He’s the leader in the future of technology and seems to be an alright guy. What Korra and the gang find out is that he’s actually working with Amon in his plan. Hiroshi aids Amon in his attack against Republic City and even fights against his own daughter. His reasoning for being on the side of the equalists is because Asami’s mother was killed by a firebender. It’s a choice that he must live with but he is able to repair his relationship with Asami in the final season.

5 Kuvira Uses Spirit Weapon On Bataar

Legend of Korra 10 Worst Things The Villains Have Ever Done

In this scene, Bataar Jr is captured by Korra and interrogated. Korra threatens to make it her life mission to never let him see Kuvira again. Bataar Jr tries to talk Kuvira out of taking over Republic City and going back home in a very heartfelt conversation that almost makes it seem as if she will give up. However, she’s made up her mind and is willing to sacrifice anything, even the love of her life to unite her new Earth Empire. She uses the deadly Spirit Weapon on Bataar’s location and wounds him, causing him to come to understand that she must be stopped.

4 Unalaq Cuts Korra’s Ties With Her Past Lives

Legend of Korra 10 Worst Things The Villains Have Ever Done

Oddly, this is something that wasn’t touched on too much after it happened besides a couple of small mentions of it. In Korra’s fight with Unalaq at the end of Book 2, she ends up having her past lives severed away from her.

She’s forever unable to seek guidance from Aang or any of the other past Avatars now. We’ll have to see if Korra manages to repair this connection in the comic book series that continues her story. It’s one of the most devastating things that a villain has done to Korra.

3 Tarrlok Bloodbends Korra

Legend of Korra 10 Worst Things The Villains Have Ever Done

When Korra goes to confront Councilman Tarrlok after discovering that he’s up to no good, she engages in an intense duel with him. Nearly beating him, she becomes frozen in a strange state that is very familiar to fans of the original show. Tarrlok uses bloodbending, the darkest type of bending that’s been shown in both Avatar: The Last Airbender, and The Legend of Korra. It allows the user to control the blood in someone’s body to turn them into a helpless puppet. It’s one of the best reveals in the entire show and it’ll be interesting to see if bloodbending returns in the live-action show.

2 Zaheer Poisons Korra

Legend of Korra 10 Worst Things The Villains Have Ever Done

After successfully capturing Korra, Zaheer’s dark plan is now in place. Intending on destroying the Avatar cycle for good now in place with Korra chained, our hero is left helpless. The Avatar state works as a defense mechanism and for Zaheer to effectively kill Korra and end the cycle, he must poison her with mercury. It’s a brutal scene that may be the most pain Korra has had to deal with from any villain. However, Zaheer underestimates her resilence and she’s able to resist the poison. It’s one of the most memorable scenes of the show and impacts a lot of the first half of Book 4.

1 Tarrlok Blows Up The Boat

This could almost be tied with a heroic thing as Tarrlok knew that there was no redemption for Amon but it’s one of, if not, the darkest scenes in the entire series. Perhaps they would have gone to live a happy life away from Republic City but Tarrlok took it upon himself to blow him as his brother up by electrocuting the gas tank. Amon is a tragic villain that was extremely flawed. It could have been interesting to see him return in another season but this was a fitting end for his character arc as well as Tarrlok’s.
