The Legend Of Korra season 3 introduces viewers to the Red Lotus, a splinter organization of the White Lotus from Avatar: The Last Airbender. Red Lotus members are the primary villains of season 3, as they attempt to dismantle national power structures and end the Avatar cycle in order to bring about “true” freedom in the world. The Red Lotus members are not only fiercely ideological, they are also powerful fighters with highly specialized bending powers, some of which are entirely new to the Avatar universe.

The Red Lotus was founded by former White Lotus member Xai Bau, who believed the organization had lost sight of its true path. In The Legend of Korra, new airbender Zaheer leads the group, and she’s joined by his three closest allies: P’Li, Ghazan, and Ming Hua, who can each bend one of the other three elements. Thanks to their strength and closeness, they’re a perfectly balanced team capable of topping monarchies.

The Legend Of Korra introduces six Red Lotus benders; however, the organization stretches far beyond these characters, with sleeper cells all over the world. Still, the show emphasizes the bending prowess of the six known benders who present a considerable threat to Korra. From lavabending to flight, to combustion, here are the powers of every known Red Lotus member with the exception of Xai Bau, who was never identified as a bender or non-bender.

Zaheer

Originally a non-bender, Zaheer is a martial arts expert who was able to hold his own against skilled benders like Zuko even when he had no bending powers of his own. However, the Harmonic Convergence, which happened at the end of The Legend Of Korra season 2, resulted in a great shift and awakened a new generation of airbenders, including Zaheer. Based on his previous martial arts experience, Zaheer was quickly able to adapt to his new powers.

Even before he became an airbender, Zaheer followed the airbenders’ philosophy and teachings, especially those of Guru Laghima. In the final episodes of season 3, Zaheer follows Laghima’s advice to “let go your earthly tether. Enter the void. Empty and become wind.” This particular teaching helps him understand how to fly, an airbending power that is completely new to the show.

P’Li

P’Li’s powers are instantly recognizable to fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender; she has the same tattoo on her forehead as Combustion Man. Like Combustion Man, P’Li can generate strong blasts from her forehead. She is only the second character in the Avatar universe who is able to do this. Throughout the season, P’Li is also able to bend the arc of her blasts, demonstrating a higher level of control than Combustion Man. However, P’Li and Combustion Man also share a weakness: if they get hit in the forehead, they are stunned and unable to properly create their destructive beams. Combustionbending is a subset of firebending, which P’Li excels at as well. She primarily uses her combustionbending, but in the fight between the Red Lotus and former Fire Lord Zuko, she quells a massive fire blast from Zuko’s dragon with firebending.

Ghazan

Ghazan is an earthbender unlike any other. He is the first lavabender in either Avatar series, with the ability to turn everything from earthen projectiles to the whole ground into lava. While he has mastered general earthbending techniques – he easily defeats the Dai Li with their own rock gloves when the Red Lotus confronts the Earth Queen, for example – he prefers to use lavabending against his opponents.

Some of Ghazan’s signature lavabending moves include creating star-shaped projectiles out of lava, which he uses to cut through hard surfaces and attack from long ranges, and turning any earth bent at him into lava. The latter is particularly deadly, as he redirects opponents’ earthbending attacks in a way that no bender can counter – that is, until Bolin. Ghazan’s lavabending is incredibly powerful; he uses it to bring down the walls separating the rings of Ba Sing Se, destroy the entire Northern Air Temple, and collapse a cave system. His ability to lavabend proficiently, at both small and large scales, makes him a truly formidable foe.

Ming-Hua

A waterbending master, Ming-Hua’s bending skill is as much an extension of her body as it is a fighting style. Ming-Hua does not have arms, so instead, she uses water to generate tentacle-like water limbs that can be used in a variety of ways. This waterbending technique was originally introduced in Avatar: The Last Airbender, but Ming-Hua takes the skill up several notches in The Legend of Korra.

Ming-Hua’s water arms allow her to travel incredibly fast through unconventional routes. For example, when rescuing P’Li from prison, she climbs a sheer ice wall by freezing the ends of her water arms and using them like ice picks, proving her arms’ strength. She also uses this selective freezing technique in combat, turning her arms into deadly weapons. Ming-Hua also employs classic waterbending moves in tandem with her water arms, such as firing ice projectiles or creating water spheres. The versatility of her limbs, plus her general waterbending skills, make her a force to be reckoned with.

Unalaq

Before he made it his life’s mission to bring back the spirits and end the Avatar cycle, Unalaq, Chief of the Northern Water tribe and Korra’s uncle, was a part of the Red Lotus. He was originally part of Zaheer’s plot to kidnap young Korra but did not end up participating. This way he evaded capture and could continue to rule in the north.

Like Ming-Hua, Unalaq is a master waterbender. He easily defeated his brother Tonraq in season 2 and holds his own against Korra. He is also the first character in either Avatar series who is able to spiritbend, a subset of waterbending. Spiritbending is a way to calm and control angered spirits that involves bending a healing tendril of water around the spirit. When used on humans, it has potential to destroy a person’s soul. Unalaq very nearly spiritbends Korra and Jinora, but fails. Later, Korra masters spiritbending and uses it to banish Unalaq and Vaatu.

Aiwei

Aiwei is not only a member of the Red Lotus, he is also one of Suyin Beifong’s most trusted advisors in the city of Zaofu, home of the Metal Clan. Like other citizens of Zaofu, Aiwei is an earthbender and a metalbender. However, similarly to other members of the Red Lotus, he also has another highly specialized skill.

Aiwei is a truth seer: he uses his seismic sense to detect small changes in people’s physical responses, such as their heart rate. This allows him to tell when people are lying, which makes him useful to a leader like Suyin. But he can also use his power to deceive; in season 3, he falsely claims that a guard is lying in order to pin the blame of the Red Lotus’s Zaofu attack on him. Toph originally pioneered the truth-seeing technique, making Aiwei’s ability another callback to The Legend Of Korra’s predecessor.
