A recent tweet making a pun about the Pokémon fanbase has gone viral, and it’s simply the perfect Pokémon joke. Because Pokémon is one of the most profitable franchises in the world (and hosts one of the largest fanbases, as well), making jokes comes with the territory.

Lately, the fanbase is appears to be focused on rumors flying around upcoming Pokémon game, Pokémon Legends: Arceus. A recent leak suggests Arceus’ starter Pokémon, Rowlet, Cyndaquil, and Oshawott, will receive Hisuian variants in Pokémon Legends: Arceus. With such a new and exciting game set to release in only a few months, it’s no surprise the fanbase is speculating what exciting changes and additions will be present in the upcoming Nintendo Switch title.

In a photo tweeted by maliceguardian, the literal base of a fan left a Poké-Ball-shaped imprint on the carpet, leading to a very literal and excellent pun. While the pun is humorous alone, many other Twitter users deconstructed the meme in ways that provide nuanced meaning. On user commented, “I’ll be honest, I thought this was a political take on how the fanbase is trying to hold [onto] the past of what [Pokémon] used to be and is being left behind, but it uh… it’s just a meme.”

Another user touched on the Pokémon fanbase’s massive size and how the tweet’s interactions highlight such a reality by commenting, “It gets meta when you realize only fans of [Pokémon] would enjoy this… and it has 102,000 likes… which says something about the size of the human fan base of [Pokémon].” At the time of writing, the tweet has over 322,000 likes and over 37,000 retweets, showing that even a pun as simple as this can catch a lot of attention. The Pokémon fanbase has been up in arms recently over news that the upcoming Pokémon Legends: Arceus isn’t open-world as originally expected. While the game appears to be a departure from the gameplay of Pokémon installments, there was some disappointment to hear the Hisui region won’t be fully open-world.

Based on this simple yet delightful Twitter meme, the Pokémon fan base appear passionate and seemingly have a strong collective identity. This is in no small part due to the brand itself, which is clearly so recognizable that people can easily visualize a Poké Ball in the indented pattern of a carpet left behind by a inanimate object.
