Legendary Pokemon are among the most coveted and hard to find in the franchise. May trainers spend the majority of their journey catching and battling some of the more common Pokemon in their respective regions, with legendaries often just out of reach. Every region has its fair share of exclusive legendary and mythical Pokemon tied to its respective history and mythology, making them all the more difficult to track down and obtain.
Things work very differently in the Pokemon anime compared to the games. The same can be said for the manga adaptations as well. Though they all work within the overall Pokemon universe, they each approach various aspects of world-building and lore differently. In the games, legendary and mythical Pokemon are typically caught by the player character, serving as a reward for their hours-long efforts. And while Ash and company haven’t caught most of the legendaries and mythical Pokemon they’ve encountered during their adventures, a surprising amount of trainers outside of the main cast have.
Availability in the Anime vs. Games
There are currently 901 known Pokemon in the Pokemon universe. Of those 901, 59 (6.55%) are legendary while 22 (2.33%) are mythical. It’s no wonder why most trainers have a hard time finding them, and why they’re so difficult to track down. Most of these rare Pokemon can only be found in certain locations or under specific circumstances. In the games, most legendary and mythical Pokemon have a catch rate of 3 (1.6%), making them as difficult to catch as they are to track down.
Finding Legendary and Mythical Pokemon in the games usually comes later on in a trainer’s journey, and requires them to first unlock certain areas and have a strong enough party by their side. This also carries over in the anime to some degree, though the various narratives told through the series and its films allow for more frequent encounters.
Most legendary and mythical Pokemon first appear in a movie, often serving as the focus of that film. They are usually depicted as God-like creatures compared to their contemporaries and are sought out by dubious individuals and organizations because of this.
Ash will usually have some chance encounter or a special bond with these Pokemon, but unlike the game protagonists will not try to capture them and add them to his party. This makes sense from a narrative perspective, as having a main character with a handful of overpowered Pokemon doesn’t make for interesting storytelling. But certain trainers have been shown to have legendary and mythical Pokemon regardless.
Trainers Who Own Legendaries in the Anime
A very exclusive group of trainers either own, or have owned legendary and mythical Pokemon in the anime. Noland, the Frontier Brain in charge of the Battle Factory, befriended an Articuno in the anime, and while it’s not an official member of his party, it fights alongside him just as any other Pokemon would. Brandon, the Frontier Brain in charge of the Battle Pyramid, seems to have all three legendary titans in Poke Balls, and has trained them alongside befriending Regigigas as well.
Ash’s battle against Tobias in the Lily of the Valley Conference was especially difficult due to the trainer having both a Darkrai and Latios. Another trainer in the Lily of the Valley Conference is shown to have a Heatran, making that a fairly difficult competition for those without any legendary or mythical help. Plenty of other trainers have been shown to have at least one legendary or mythical in their party, and Ash himself finally got hold of a mythical Pokemon when he caught a Meltan in the anime.
It’s unknown whether or not these Pokemon are one of a handful of their kind, or if they’re the only ones in existence like in the games. The anime has shown that even legendary Pokemon breed in the wild, as was the case with Lugia, Latios, and Latias. So while they’re still so rare that it’s unlikely most trainers will find them, legendary and mythical Pokemon seem to be a little more common in the anime.
