Warning: SPOILERS for Legends of Tomorrow season 5, episode 11, “Ship Broken”.

Mick Rory aka Heatwave (Dominic Purcell) is responsible for how DC’s Legends of Tomorrow maintains their time-traveling operation thanks to his thievery. This surprising reveal came in season 5, episode 11, “Ship Broken”, when Mick brought his estranged daughter Lita (Mina Sundwall) onto the Waverider as his guest; once behind the curtain, Rory’s rebellious teenage offspring got to meet the other Legends and she found out her ex-con dad “keeps the lights on” aboard the time machine by stealing untold amounts of riches throughout history.

Along with his partner-in-crime Leonard Snart aka Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller), Mick was originally introduced as one of The Flash’s rogues before he became a founding member of the Legends of Tomorrow in 2015. In fact, Mick is one of the last two inaugural Legends along with Sara Lance aka White Canary (Caity Lotz). But while Sara ascended to become the team’s Captain, Mick often merely provided the muscle, although the series began to explore his hidden depths like his relationship to his father (whom he set on fire). Legends of Tomorrow season 3 showed Mick’s artistic side, which grew into him becoming a successful sci-fi/romance novelist under the pseudonym Rebecca Silver. But Rory’s life became more complicated in Legends of Tomorrow season 5 when he found out he has a daughter and he missed out on her childhood because he was in prison – a situation Mick is admirably (and awkwardly) trying to rectify, although Lita wasn’t going to make it easy for him.

In Legends of Tomorrow season 5, episode 11, “Ship Broken”, Nate Heywood aka Steel (Nick Zano) tried to go to bat for Mick and he proudly told Lita that Heatwave actually “funds this whole operation through the simple act of stealing”. With the cat out of the bag, Mick showed Lita a heretofore unseen room in the Waverider which is filled with gold, priceless artwork, and ancient artifacts from floor to ceiling. Lita was dazzled by the “Scrooge McDuck vibe” of Mick’s money bin, which he estimated is worth “a billion” (though he has no idea). Mick was then incensed when Lita suggested traveling back through time and investing it so they could “buy Manhattan in the 1600s… invent BitCoin… and be partners in becoming frickin’ rich!” In any case, the Waverider is carrying an untold fortune and Mick’s Scrooge McDuck room is evidently now the Legends’ main source of funding.

The time-tossed misfits’ money troubles became a concern in Legends of Tomorrow season 4. Back then, the team was operated under the auspices of the Time Bureau and was founded by the U.S. Government. Nate’s father, Hank Heywood (Tom Wilson), was the Pentagon’s liaison to the Time Bureau and Ava Sharpe (Jes Macallan) haggled with Hank to secure funding for the Legends, which included $135 million for a new Time Core for the Waverider, $1.7 million for historical costumes, and a line item for “assorted condiments”.

The fact that the Waverider has a Fabrication Room (their equivalent of Star Trek’s replicators) made their need for buying supplies and sundries confusing – but then again, it’s possible the Legends had been bilking the U.S. Government for money all along. Then, once Uncle Sam’s well dried up after the Time Bureau was shut down, Mick simply resorted to taking whatever the team needed (and he wanted), and then some, from history itself. The Legends are certainly not above stealing from history; Nate once admitted that it was perfectly normal for them to indulge in “light thievery” and bring back souvenirs from their jaunts throughout time. However, Mick Rory’s Scrooge McDuck room is next-level larceny.

It’s not yet clear who else among the Legends besides Nate knows about the fortune in gold and artifacts Mick stores in the Waverider’s money bin. However, as team leader, Sara, a former League of Assassins member, probably condones it (despite her late father Quentin Lance being a cop). The Scrooge McDuck room underscores how vastly different Legends of Tomorrow is from the Arrowverse’s other superhero shows since it’s hard to imagine do-gooders like the Flash (Grant Gustin) and especially Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) being okay with Mick Rory pilfering riches from across time to keep the Waverider flying.
